Question 911SC Hot start problem

My 82 911SC occassionally won't re-start after being shut down when hot. I turn the ignition switch and hear a clicking, but no starter. After cooling a little while, it starts. Someone told me that a 12V starter relay will eliminate this problem, which they said is related to too much heat in the relay. This part looks like a Ford type relay and is selling for about $20.

Anyone have any information on this "solution". Is it right? Thanks for any insight.

Dion -

My 81SC just started (no pun intended) to do this same thing. Real annoying situation. I called the wrench and he said exactly what you are saying below. He said it's about an hours work.

I will let you know if this resolves the my situation.

Check your ground strap (tranny to frame). If it looks oxidized, this could cause an issue.

You starter solenoid may also be going bad.

Sticking solenoid due to heat and age.....a tap with a BFH frees it up when stuck and a replacement will cure it.

After a lot of frustration from being left sitting at parking lots all over Oahu, I replaced the electrical portion of the ignition switch, then the engine ground strap with no good results. Then I installed the relocated starter relay and I haven't had a problem in 4 years.

I had this problem twice. First time it was the solenoid. Second, it was the electrical switch inside the ignition switch. A real pain in the butt to have this intermittent problem. I had to park my car in such a way that I could push start it if it acted up. And when I am pushing it, I am thinking, "The things I do for this car!"
