project complete... WOW
So, made the "big" move and decided to tackle the shifter and bushings in the P-car. Did a new coupler and rebuilt the entire shifter. So after a couple of hours, everything works and the car shifts MAGNIFICENTLY!!! I'm SO happy!!
Some thoughts on the process. 1. Do a leather boot... just looks good. 2. Pay attention to what Wayne's book says about the springs (especially new ones) LOTS of load there!!! 3. It was really a very simple job, the only discrepency I had with the book, was that my selector shaft bracket is bolted to the shifter. The book states it's bolted to the tunnel. Must be a model year difference. 4. If your having any difficulties with shifting, do this stuff first. Pretty much cured most of my first gear balkiness completely. Very good shifting!! With well defined gates. 5. Replace at the very least, the pin that holds the shifter to the selector. Mine had a small amount of slop. I did all the internals except the actual rectangular bracket the shifter goes into. I chose to not do a short shift, as I had read about the change in precision of the shift. One day I'll do the WEVO... Paul's (shrup)looks great in his car... so it will be a matter of funds!!! Great project that I HIGHLY recommend, if it hasn't been done already!! ![]()
