3.6 Conversion underway...need input

I decided instead of a 3.2 I'd go all the way with a 3.6. My mechanic found a solid 92 3.6 with low miles. It's a car that he maintained so while it's still a gamble it's much less of one.

My 3.0 is out and sold...The 3.6 is purchased

Anyway

I need help

1) While it's not optimal, I'd like to use the SSIs off my 3.0 for a while at least. Is this doable on a 964 engine. I want my heat.

This conserves about $2000 that I can put into the suspension.

2) Are there any issues keeping the AC - does the cyntex chip keep you from stalling with a light fly wheel and AC.

Thanks

Jeff C

The SSI's will work w/ a liitle modification, they are too small for best performance.

The stalling issue is over blown. I had a stock 964 chip and a 9# Patrick flwheel w/ no stalling what so ever. Currently I have an even lighter f/w w/ Cyntex chip and no stalling. The heavier Patrick f/w was more comfortable for street use, the car was like a tractor. the lighter f/w requires more feathering w/ the clutch. If you use AC then there may be more of an issue related to that. I dunno about AC.

These have been posted numerous times before, but what the hey,

964 w/ SSI's and home made heat x-over.

Bill has it covered well but here are my thought anyway.

You should be fine on the street w/ SSIs, you will lose a little hp on the top end but I’m sure you will still be happy w/ it. I think a little less hp and being able to do suspension upgrades is a good trade off.

I run a NBD dual chip in the stock setting (so stock chip) w/ the lightweight flywheel. Except for the initial testing to make sure everything was working, I haven’t even run it in the performance setting (even at the track), which is a lot like the Cyntex. The only issue is that when the engine is cold you have to have the accelerator all the way to idle long enough for the idle speed valve to take over before pushing in the clutch. Takes a little getting used to but overall I’ve been very happy w/ the performance and streetablity of the stock chip.

Jack runs a/c w/ a NBD chip in the stock setting mostly and has no issues that I know of.

my car also has the Cyntex chip anf yes for a couple minutes it idles like *****, you need to have him inspect the heads for leaks while the motor is out, the 92 motor doesnt have head gaskets, also you had better hang on to that 2k for suprises, you need some type of oil cooler the 3.6 doesnt have a motor cooler, replace the rear seal adjust the valves, you will want to buy a instant-g kit if your having someone do the conversion to save on hours, the stock air box works but you have to play with it a cone is the easiest, you may think about plugs etc while the engine is out, make sure you have all the part dme harnesses etc, i had a sachs power clutch already and had the disc reworked with a race compound, k9 had a stock clutch and believe he toasted it, the two rubber lines on the fuel line comming from under the car make sure you dont give them away with the 3.0 those fittings are one of a kind, also you should look at widebodies heat tube, that pretty much uses up your spare 2k, Kevin

Don't know why, but my 993 motor with Cyntex chip idles steady as a rock. Even with a lightweight flywheel.

MuffinMan 04-03-2004 11:13 AM

I believe the 993 engines (maybe 96+ ?) don't have the same stalling issues.

Jack Olsen 04-03-2004 11:38 AM

With AC my 1993 (964) 3.6 idles fine, with the chip in either the NBD position or the stock position.

I think it's smart to put off the big exhaust expense. When I initially did my swap, I put in a Carrera exhaust, with a bypass pipe, and drove like that for a long time. You can get a Carrera setup for about ten cents on the dollar compared to the GHL or B&B setups. It costs you a little hp at the high end, but we're talking about 3.6, here: even with a restrictive exhaust, it's got a lot of power.

A few years from now, you can spring for headers, and you'll get a nice little bump in power that you'll be able to appreciate.

Thanks Guys

Bill - Thanks for the pictures. I know I've seen them before - thanks for the repost.

Kevin - I've set aside about $2K (outside of suspension cash) to do odds and ends on the motor while it's out. The '92 engines do have head gaskets. Porsche started putting them in about mid '91. As for oil cooling I'm working on that. I have a large mocal unit in the right fender with screened cut outs in the fender for air flow. I'm deciding on wether to do a left fender unit or center.

Jack - Thanks -That's what I was looking for. The been there done that input. At this point the money is better spent other places.

Again thanks for the input...I'm sure there will be more questions to come.

The most efficient place to put an additional cooler is the center. You don't even need a very big one in that position.

Jcon 04-04-2004 07:21 AM

I know it's less efficient, but I'll probably go with the left fender. I really would like to keep it as stock looking as possible - sleeper kind of thing.

I'm w/ you on that.

My 1990 3.6 , with B+B headers with heat and Timmings muffler, starts and idles just fine with a cyntrex chip .. zero stalling issues ...

POVI - Are you running a lightweight flywheel? How about AC?

The idle can be improved by making sure that a) the oxygen sensor and the head temp sensors are good, b) the idle switch on the throttle body engages, c) there are no vacuum leaks and d) adjusting the AFM correctly. If everything is done properly the 964 should idle rock-solid. Some of the performance chips (Cyntex, NBD, etc. ) improve the idle catch for a light flywheel. They increase the RPM level at witch the DME starts to deliver fuel again under decel.

If the engine is hunting a chip wouldn't help. It's most likey the AFM not adjusted properly. Check all the above points or have them checked by a competend mechanic that has worked on 964 and later engines before.

Cheers,
Ingo

Hi Jeff

Im running a lightweight flywheel , sachs power clutch
with a late 915 ROW 915 trans with limited slip and integraded oil pump and cooler. No A/C.

Just for everybodys info ... I did have a hunting idle when i first installed my 3.6 ..ended up being the idle switch contacts on the throttle body was not closing correctly, as Ingo had mentioned above.

Fix was just adjusting the switch plate so that when the throtle is at rest the switch contacts are closed on the mico-switch , It can easily be heard with the engine off ..you will hear a distinct 'click' when engaged properly.Symptoms are idle will keep hunting between 900 - 1500 rpm and not settle down.
