Starter wiring. Three wires. Two use the same style clip. Which is which?

I have the big (hot) wire on but went to install the two others and noticed there's no way to tell which wire goes where.

They are different diameters. We'll call them medium and small.

With the starter mounted to the tranny, does the medium wire go to the top tab or the bottom?

I did a search but didn't come up with anything.

The big yellow goes on top I think. Try it and see if it starts

chrisp. the two tabs coming off the starter are connected right? so it doesnt matter. as a matter of fact the hi torque starter only has one spade connector. it comes with a splitter so both wires can connect to the one spade. on my 75 the two wires are spliced together from the factory. one is for the cold start valve and the other...bleeehhh...i cant remember.

bigger wire goes to control switch on ignition and the smaller one is the CSV. doesnt matter which one goes where.

chrisp,

If you reverse the two yellow wires ... it won't start!!! So, if you already encountered that ... reverse them, and all should work fine! One terminal, #50, is the conventional solenoid lead, and the other goes to cold-start valve.

As the following diagram shows ... the SC starter solenoid is unique in that it has a second set of contacts strictly dedicated to the cold-start circuit!

I am putting the engine back in today and I got to these wires and couldn't recall which one went where. I am not even close to trying to fire it up yet. I would like to wire it correctly the first time so I don't have to fix it later. I will check to see if the two spades are linked/connected somehow. The are relatively far apart from each other......1" or so.

Not sure why Porsche would add a second spade connector when they could have just spliced into the existing harness. So I assuming there's a correct way and an incorrect way.

If anyone has any additional details let me know.

chrisp,

I already posted the answer as to 'WHY' there are two terminals!!!

If you want to be sure which lug is correct ... check resistance to ground. The solenoid coil terminal will have a low resistance to ground, less than 50 Ohms. The switched contact for CSV will have infinite resistance to ground ... unless something is wrong with solenoid!
