Fire Extinguisher Location

Finally bought a nice 2.5 lb. Halon extingiusher (from our host, of course - great service!). I'm thinking of mounting it beneath the dashboard in my 71, directly below the glovebox. There is metal framing at the lower edge of the dash and it would make for a sturdy place to attach the bracket.

Besides cutting into the passenger's legroom a bit, can anyone think of a reason NOT to mount it there - before I start drilling holes ......

Normal driving will vibrate the unit enought for it to swing and loosen the mounting points. If it is on the floor in front of the seat or over the tunnel, the majority of the weight is stationary and on the floor. To put under the glove box you will probably need extra straps.

Curt,

I'm going to be doing the same thing. Right now I have a fire extinguisher perched precariously between the front seats behind the emergency brake. After seeing the fire damage to adman's car this week, I really want to get that thing mounted before driving season starts!

I'm getting a Brey Krause mount for my 2.5lb halon. The one that attaches to & slides with the passenger seat. Seems like a pretty cool solution- can't wait.

I guess my thought for mounting it under the dash was pretty much for looks. I bought the chrome extinguisher and thought it would look pretty good there. Yeah, I know - stupid reasoning but ........

If you use the car for DE, you might want to consider mounting the FE in a place you car reach it WITH YOUR HARNESSES ON!!!! In case of a rollover or fire where your belts jam, you will be needing the FE to protect YOURSELF until help arrives!!! Not the car. Plus in my past experience , the small FE's are not going to save the car too much. Used 4 of them on an engine fire on a 944T in the parking lot at a DE event and I still needed to grab the big monster FE from the hotel lobby to put out the fire. Just something to think about.

I like the extinguisher low and out of the way. In the event of an accident, your passenger would get banged up pretty good on the shins with it under the glove box. Someone a day or two ago suggested mounting to the cover over the shift coupler. If a littel bling is what you are after, it will still be seen there.

If you do a search, you will find several pics of very creative mounting
brackets and positions. Some great (and some sick) minds on this board!

Most track regs stipulate it has be easily reached by the driver.

Mine mounted on the rocker/kicker/sill panel just ahead of the and beside the drivers seat. There is nothing in there (RHD car) and you can whack self tappers straight throught the carpet. Oddly, it doest get in the way at all.

Additional benefit, no visible holes. Bear in mind, 1kg/2.5 lbs needs to fairly well tied down. Be deadly if loose in a hit.

Curt,

I also think that, in a street car, its hard to beat the passenger seat rail mounting point. Even in a street car, I want to be able to reach it while still belted should that situation ever arise.

Brey Krause makes a nice 69-73 911 extinguisher bracket for 2.5 lb bottles. Bolts on/off with no holes to drill, easy to reach and far less intrusive for a passenger than it would be under the dash.

Thanks for the suggestions. I don't track the car, so that's not a concern. I'll have to think about this one a bit .....

Tim, I've heard that the BK bracket doesn't fit early (thru 73) factory sport seats. I'll try to confirm this as I want to install a fire extinguisher in my 73E.

I have mine under the drivers seat. It rests on a piece of foam to keep it from rattling and it is held in place with a bungee cord.

I think I had heard that also about the BK bracket. I could fab my own for that location tho. It looks fairly simple.

In the 911 I bolted it to the vertical portion of the tub just in front of the passenger side rear seat. No extra bracket necessary, I can reach it strapped into my harnesses and it doesn't effect seat movement. You'll need to drill holes in the body but they are small and covered by the carpet it you remove the extinguisher someday.
In the 944 I have a homemade bracket just in front of the passenger seat.
I recommend a dual strap extinguisher holder where ever you mount it. A piece of masking tape over the ends of the holder latches will keep things from catching the latch and opening it by accident.

I can tell you for sure the Stable Energies bracket does not fit early sport seats (ask me how I know). They are working on one that does. I suspect it would be the same for BK.

I'm waiting for a good sport seat mount, just can't bring myself to drill holes. An underdash mount would be nice if easily accessible and solid. otherwise, if you don't mind the holes, I don't see any problems.

I have a BIG hole where the factory AC duct came in the passenger cab - I keep thinking it would be cool to mount the bottle fore/aft through the hole with some sort of a sleeve. Turn it back into a functional element, wouldn't be easy though.

Edit: Very cool rally timer!!

Curt, I've been questioning the same idea. Mine is currently attached to my roll bar but I want to move that weight to the front passenger side where its needed most. (call me anal.... I know).

Does anyone know if the BK style mount allows the passenger seat to still slide? Does it slide with the seat?

Clint
