Yikes $5410 in maintenance and upgrades in 17 months

Just ran through all my reciepts since i bought the car.

Maintenance $3650 (includes $1800 for a new clutch & Flywheel)
Perf Upgrades $1850 (not necessary but needed )

That averages to $312 per month over 17 months.

If i did all my own wrenching on valve adjustment and clutch install i would have saved about $1200 on labor for the maintenance portion.

Is this fairly consistent with everyone's experience or am i just spending too much on this old car?

Hmmm, maybe a 993 or Boxter would actually cost less in the long run.

LOL! Sounds pretty cheap to me.

I bought my car for $10k, drove her for five years and only spent money on oil and gas.

Then I found Pelican Parts; My $10k SC became a $40k SC in 18 months.

I do my own wrenching so my cost has been very very very low. I mean very very very very low.

As a consolation, $300.00 is still a lot less compared to the monthly on a newer car.

I am looking at the 993's lately. With turbo flares, of course.

Boxster? I would not mind owning the newer more powerful verison. Don't flame me guys....but I work in West L.A./Beverly Hills area, I park my car next to 2 Boxsters, and people still pay almost all attention to my car. Go figure!!!

Why would you do a silly thing like that? My wife asked me yesterday what I've spent in the last year, I told her that I don't know & don't want her to know. Beween parts & tools, I have spent well over $6k since last May. If I were to add up the receipts, I would have to be honest with the wife when she asks & I don't think that would be prudent.

My '78 3.3 Turbo cost me about $13,000 in 13 months. My worst car experience, ever.

Most of my Porsches have been pretty inexpensive to own.

Paul,
I actually had that very discussion with the wife on the way to dinner. I said "maybe i should just lease a STI or S2000, drive it to death return it for a new one 36 months later."

She said, "you will not be happy unless you have a Porsche in the garage. If you want to switch cars go get another Porsche, and not that crappy Boxster thing either, get a (newer) 911."

I love her man

Im loggin in at just under $5000 for 11 months. This includes new clutch, Bilsteins, Yohohamas... valve adjustment (pro), Magnecors, CV boots and repak (pro)...and a bunch of smaller scale items that I fixed or replaced via Pelican.

Next on the list are lowering the car, alignment... new alternator belt...and its good to go.

Better yet, what do you plan to spend in the next 12 months? Or in fantasy terms, what will it cost to get your car well sorted in your mind?

Mine? New headliner, paint, 935 mirrors and a ducktail. 8 or 9 grand should cover it

All performance and cosmetic upgrades.
Theres a clutch and flywheel in there but I took that chance to upgrade and did the labor myself with some friends.

I do not expect to do anything other than change the oil, adjust the valves, get a new set of tires, brake pads and another alingment in the next 12 to 24 months. The car is in immaculate condition mechanically and cosmetically. But that was what i expected the first 17 months as well

All the low hanging fruit perf mods have been done...chip, dual out muff, pre muff, swiss cheese air box, thick T bars, adj sway bars, camber brace, fat fuchs, Sport Shocks, tie rods, PCA sticker...there must be more

At 95k, i suspect i will need a top end in the not so distant future, maybe another 25k miles or so.

All in all, i do not regret spending the time and money one bit. But am not certian if i want to do it again. But sounds like 993s could be worse...

I've owned my car since November of last year. So far did the typical mods; chip, Dansk pre-muffler, Bilsteins. Still have to do lowering, alignment and H4's.
A broken head stud discovered during it's FIRST valve adjustment realy blew the budget. While I was in there, I replaced the clutch disk, did the G50 clutch arm update, new fuel lines, valve stem seals and engine reseal.

Probably spent about $5K so far. Yikes, that's about $1500 per month.

In the last 17 months mine has cost me a minor service only (~US$500) and a new set of tyres (~US$700) - but only thanks to track days / driving sideways through the boonies.

You must have had a bad run.

Since June 2002, when I bought the car, I have spent close to $3000, but I knew that going in. I had to buy alot of tools, since I didn't have any to begin with. The car has provided us with more than that amount of money in pure fun!! Any hobby, interest, etc... will cost you $, it's something you really enjoy or you wouldn't be doing. I don't think anyone has out a gun to our heads and forced us to own a Porsche... If you're into golf, you buy clubs and accessories, if you're into sports, you're buying tickets to games, people have so many expensive hobbies and I can't think of a more enjoyable one for my family than the car!!

I bought my present 911 (1980 SC) about 6 months ago . I have owned several before but sold my last one (an 86) 10 years ago because I thought it was becoming expensive.I sold it with 50000 mi on it , regretted it immediately and would pay almost as much today to buy it back.
Consider depreciation when you examine your capital costs.
I have rebuilt the transmission ,new clutch ,alternator front end bushings, sway bar upgrade and added SSI,s and a Carrera oil cooler to the 80 . I am now stripping the paint for a bare metal repaint. I knew it needed most of this going in. Cost todate about $13500 including the car.
Seems like a good deal to me as I could get most or all back. The 911 is like real estate. The only thing that works in an old house is the owner. Buy a house and resell it tomorrow and it will cost you a fortune but buy it ,upgrade it enjoy it, resell it several years later and make a profit or at least come closer to break even and enjoy it in the mean time.
There is a thread runnong about costs for a 100000 mi and cost comes down to $2 or $3 per day KEEP THE FAITH

When I bought my 930, I looked high and low for a cherry unmolested example. Since then cubic dollars on all sorts of piddly things... that don't really add any value to the car. Even the bolt-ons on are worth alot more off the car. I love my car- honey if you read this, don't get me wrong- but if there is a next time, I'll get one just like the above threads where a guy takes a 28K car, sinks 13K into it, and sells it for 30K.

Last 17 months????? With a new motor being built, the upgrades, minor mechanicals, probably around $21 grand. And now it will need to be painted so add another $10 for that. Let's see, how much did I pay for it and will I ever get my money out? "Homey don't think so."

MOST of us own are rides outright.....OTHERS have rent/lease/monthly payments on their rides....

OURS mostly stay within a few percentage points of current value while THEIR value drops like a stone the minute it leaves the showroom floor.....

Ours are unique and have personal touches, THEIRS will be approached by a perfect stranger and assumed to be THEIRS and will most likely even be opened by a similar key our remote alarm code....

Quityerb!tchen and go drive......
