feeling pretty damn good about my 2.7

ok, it has just a tad over 50k miles. never had the thermal reactors, came with the 11 blade fan from the factory. i installed the upgrades like the pop off valve, carrera cooler. tensioners are next week. the headstuds are tight. all except the case stud near the intemediete shaft that seems to be showing signs of case stress, (it is loose and leaky, and scary to tighten), the car seems ok. it runs damn good, revs up great. burn almost no oil, it prefers to leak it. i still have a bunch of work to do on it, but i have started a "new motor" fund. very vague question, but is it possible to dodge the 2.7 curse? i hope i dont jinx myself! i am getting crappy gas mileage. my last tank was 14mpg. i am going to granny drive the next tank to see if it is a right foot problem. what is the most mileage people have seen from their mid 70's 2.7? i have been driving my car daily. i may have to put the battery charger on the truck.

Cliff, you go boy! Glad to hear it's running well. You probably need to drive it harder to get better mileage. Of course that doesn't work, but who cares about mileage?

Personally, I think all that 2.7 jinx crap is a load of crap. I was just telling someone in the gas station today that they're great motors once the reactors are off and an 11-blade fan is installed. They're just a bear to take apart and put back together again. A Humpty-Dumpty sort of engine, if you know what I mean. That's why I have a 3.0.

Stop and go will kill the mileage on mine. I drove 400 miles on Sunday, I wasn't keeping track of mileage but I did notice the needle didn't move nearly as fast as when I'm driving around town. A steady cruise at 3500 rpms saves gas. And the car has been running like a dream since. Another long ride this weekend

I get about 200 miles out of my tank! Yikes. But then again I have a MFI which is running way rich. I need to lean it out quite a bit.

I like the 2.7 because it's quirky and ...well, 2.7 who ever thought of that for a displacement?

2.7 MPG

Just to chime in with the 2.7 crowd...My SSI, Dansk, 11 blade, Magnecore adorned 2.7 pulls approx 19.5 mph. I've only paid attention to one tankfull as far as mileage goes. I guess I'm too busy with the child-like giggling when behind the wheel.

How about a 2.7 world domination plot?

Used to get 18-20 mpg around town and 22-23 mpg on the highway; now with SSI's installed on a recent trip with mix of 20% urban driving and 80% highway cruising (around 75 mph with a few bursts to clear traffic) fuel mileage went over 24 mpg. Mileages are corrected for speedometer error on this originally Cali spec '76 2.7l 911S. I normally don't concern myself with the fuel economy but I noticed the gas gauge wasn't dropping as fast as usual so I checked Jim

I seem to get great gas milage when cruising on the freeway, not so great around town. I generally am on the gas pretty heavy in the low gears around town though. I call it "breezing"

I don't really have a way to measure currently because my odometer isn't working.

Though I am going for a 3.2 later on, I am really surprised with the power and torque from the stock 2.7. My motor is fresh from a rebuild, has maybe 6-800 miles on it or so. Before it was rebuilt, the motor lasted 150K miles. That's pretty impressive.

Great little car, I love it!

Gas mileage? After all the problems you've had in the past Cliff, you should be happy it's running well, screw the gas mileage, that's what Prius's are for.

Cliff-
I'm with you on the 2.7. Mine really purs and still pulls hard...that is when I'm not busy pinching fuel lines between the chassis and the steering rack or blasting the pop-off valve out of the airbox. I recently re-torqued all of my headstuds and they're fine. I enjoy this engine and I plan to run it until it craps out...or I'm seduced by another 911 needing a home.

I have had my 76 911 with over 190,000 miles for about six months. I drive it just for fun. approx 24 mpg highway around 19 mpg city. No longer leaks any oil. I just get a quick puff of blue after starting if I let it set for more than a day or two. Given the mileage, the purchase price, and the fun quotient it was a great deal.
