door swap re-wiring help needed
 

I had my Targa 85 911 door replaced with a used shell and the whole side of car repainted guards red. I now am trying to swap the mirror, windows, locks, alarm, etc to the new door and am having trouble. In particular the mirror wiring looks impossible to get out. I was told that I need to cut the wiring and resolder it back into the new door. I hate this option. 1)Please advise where to cut if this is the case. 2) My car has the factory alarm and the shell did not. I have taken the alarm lock out of the door and temporarily wired in the front trunk so the car can run. Any tips out there on drilling the door for the alarm key lock?

You will ned to take the mirror apart, early flags had the glass push pinned, sort of like door panel clips. later flags have a bayonet lock ring, which needs to be swiveled for release. then 3 8mm bolts removes the motor, now you will get to the white connector, unplug, note wire colors and use a round narrow shouldered electronic pin tool, this pushes the detent of the pin and allows the pin/wire to come out. when all the wires are out of the connector the harness can be fed out the base of the mirror and door shell. Why Porsche did it this way who knows, it sure could have been easier. choppping the wires is hack, unless you go through the repair and solder a new smaller connector setup or make damn sure you carefully twist, solder, and shrink wrap. still a hack though! I go though the entire dissasembly procedure, last thing I want is a failed mirror drive, or worse another shop finding clipped wires and pointing at my shop! transfer the position of the old lock, drill as large as you can, rotary file the rest, hand file the notch, touch up, install

Thanks. I did not want to hack into the wiring harness. How do I know if I have an early or a later flag mirror? When I was inspecting the mirror, I could not figure out how to get it out of the case. Its a 1985 model year. I was afraid of breaking it.

both of these threads hightlight the early push pin style mirror mounting, if you push the mirror to one side of the housing, look in and see a 3" black plastic ring, this would be the later bayonet style. I will have to search some old photos to show you bayonet mounting method. I bet the threads below answer your needs.
