Installing seatbelt question
 

I think the pic explains it all. I'm installing these front seatbelts in my 84 and can't seem to figure it out. The car didn't come with seatbelts (it had 5 points in it) so I don't have anything to reference. Is the pin on the retractor supposed to fit into the hole on the bracket?? Or should there be a spacer/washer between these two?

Does the pin slide easily into that hole? Do the larger holes line up when together? Those two together are a solid unit. There's no movement between them. That bracket acts as a guide for the belt to slide through the interior 1/4 trim panel. Do your panels have cutouts? Did the car come with the three female threaded anchors one for the coiled belt(pictured), and 2 pivot bolts, one near the rear of the seat and one on the B pillar? Then theres the receiver belt anchored between the seats. There is a plastic/teflon washer on each side of the metal swivel at the B pillar. There is a large thin plastic washer between the carpet and the anchor on the floor by the sill.

I installed a new belt recently, but it was such a no-brainer because I just replaced what was there. You don't have it so easy!:confused:

I think I figured out the problem. The retractors have 944 part numbers not 911 numbers. I assume that the belts are not interchangeable between these two cars?

Does anyone know if this is true?

944, 911, VW GTI, they are all Repa belts. I say if they fit, run 'em.

I just installed new seat belts which I got from Pepart in my SC. The small hole in the metal bracket guide is NOT for the pin in the retractor. If the Carrera is the same as my SC there should be a screw that comes out of the chassis that fits thru the hole so the bracket can attach directly to the chassis with a nut and washer. The large hole at the bottom of the retractor core is the one you use to attach it to the chassis with a large bolt screw. As far as whether 944 seat belts can fit in a 911 I dont see a problem as long as the male connector and female receiver fit together. Good luck.

there are 3 holes in the bracket. In the pic above, the small hole to the left fits with the screw coming out of the chassis. I'm assuming that the middle small hole is for the pin in the retractor. The retractor can't sit flush with the bracket unless the pin slides through the hole. I have a 911 retractor that I'm going to test with this weekend. I'll post the results and pics once I've checked it out.

Was this ever proven? I am doing this job right now and am ordering the metal bracket pictured above from Porsche this morning. Does the pin in the retractor fit the pin on the metal mounting bracket (middle hole)?

Does anyone know the exact size for the bolt that mates the retractor to the body of the car thru the metal support bracket? I know the bolt is a metric 8.8 but what length and width is the bolt...I cannot believe its worth $9 from Porsche?

FWIW - I tested a 944 retractor and a 911 retractor. The parts are different. The pin on the 944 is longer and a larger diameter so it doesn't fit in the middle hole of the bracket. It seems that these parts are not interchangeable.

don't know about ROW cars, but US cars have rear seat belts since 1970's, I believe. If you pull back the carpeting, I'm guessing you will find mounting holes for rear LAP belts. Porsche started putting shoulder belts in the rear in 1984. You can retrofit shoulder belts to the rear with an aftermarket kit; PEP sells them in the US. You have to bolt the retractor into the rear deck.

Ah, thats why your pic of the retractor and your mounting bracket look like different sizes (hole)...I was wondering if it was the camera angle. I just bought some really nice 1977 front belts for my 1972 Targa and have no reference so I need all the bits and pieces. I just ordered the mount plate at lunch from Porsche and was hoping it will fit my 1977 retractors...sound like it will :)
