cracked rotors!! (pics)
I finally got around to doing my brake project and upon inspecting them I noticed that the rear rotors are cracked where the E brakes make contact. Both right and left are cracked and each has multiple cracks.
Is this from heat, old age? Or previous owner jamming on the E brake? ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

Funny part is that it has always braked evenly never pulled or shimmied on braking. E-brake was a little weak though.

Tim,
I don't think cracks in the inside hub for the e brake would cause any pulling or pulsing as they don't come in contact with your regular pads. Just the e brake pad when e brake is applied. I think I would be replacing those puppies before they fall completely apart.

Question: how thick are the rotors? In the past, were the cut below the recomended width? I can't think of anything else that would cause that damage.

Yes, replace them. That can be the result of applying a parking brake when the rotors are still very hot.

Or driving with the e-brake on, and then stopping/parking with then still on. What did the e-brake pads look like? Glazed? Shelacked?
Definate e-brake involvement somehow.

Actually I have not measured them yet.
I have been wanting to replace them for a while. The outside of the rotors has a huge lip and by looking at them I am not too sure that they have ever refinished.

Yepp...that sure looks like someone took a trip with E-brake on...it heated up/expanded the disc unevenly and you got the cracks. No good.

The E-brake pad does not look too glazed. but it does have some chunks out of it. I guess this action has been done to these rotors more than once.

yep, chances are someone drove around with the ebrake on, mine look the same. That explains why I had to adjust the e brake when I bought the car.

Nothing some JBweld couldn't fix, hm.....
Ouch, that reminds me of looking at my front tires after coming back from a spirited 140 mph stint and seeing the thread peeking through on the inside. Good that is wasn't the front disks. Maybe you should inspect those as well just in case. ingo

actually, the front rotors make a great candle holder for a 3 wick candle. Looks nice as well.
