por-15 where to buy?

OK. I just got my new front suspension pan and gas tank support and need to plan a weekend to install. It seems that everyone supports the POR-15 products here on the board. Question is, where can I get it? I went to the website and got a catalog sent to me. Do I need to buy from the catalog? I have not been able to find the product in the local auto stores, etc...

Also, while I ask. Should I still apply a Zinc-based primer to the bare metal? It seems that POR-15 will take the place of that.

you can find it at hot rod parts shops.. I have one close by but only order direct because of the limited shelf life to an un-opened can.. do a "search" for plenty of info

You should order the metal etch they sell with POR. Otherwise you should sand/scuff the surface to get it to adhere well. Make sure to clean any packing oil from your new metal parts. They will prevent the POR from sticking.

Jamie is right on - carefully read all the prep instructions/FAQs on Restomotive's web site and on the product label. Prep is vital to getting good adhesion with POR15.

Garage
1. Marine Clean - burns skin - I know :-(
2. (if bare and not rusty) Metal ready - remember to rinse - will turn groovy streaky colors
3. Por-15 - thow away brushes or roller - get out of your gun fast if you are spraying.
4. ( if painting ) Ugly blue Por-15 primer
5. Then paint

Good Stuff!! - also they make a great fule tank sealer / can be used to seal new tanks also.

A couple tips more...

POR has to be top-coated, its UV sensitive. If you're doing a black top coat, get the gray POR. Makes it a lot easier to see where you've missed spots.

POR does not come off skin. Ever. Your skin flakes off, and eventually you have no more POR on you. Takes a week or two. It does come out of hair. Eventually.

Don't ask me how I know. Lets just say brush painting it on the underbelly of a car on a lift isn't a good idea.

After using it on the entire chassis/trunk/interior (after much prep), I'd have to say it seem's like it's pretty good stuff........but...

-It dries quckly and makes a mess of hair/clothes/skin. If you get it in your eye, nothing will remove it so wear goggles.

-it doesn't stick to even semi-greasy paint.

-it doesn't "cure" existing rust!!!

- the best way to prepare the surface is with following the instuctions of the POR-15 "metal-ready" which is an acid zinc-phosphorus metal prep that removes rust and coats to prevent it in one step. This dual-action doesn't seem correct, but it acts as "naval jelly" and a light zinc primer in one. Leaving any acid on metal is bad in the long run so be your own chemist.

-POR-15 seems like a non-porus plastic-like paint that works by making an air-tight bond to what it sticks to. Nothing in, nothing out, so hopefully the metal stays the same underneath. I like it's toughness in the wheel wells, but don't know the longevity of the product.

FWIW, a friend has a Landrover frame sitting in his yard that he POR'd like five years ago, and it looks as good as the day he did it. Thats why I took the time to POR the underbelly of my 911.
