Supertec opinions?

Howdy list,

I may be in the market for a new engine soon, and I keep seeing Supertec built engines for sale. Anyone have experience with these folks? I will say their engines all "look" beautiful! But I'm interested in performance and longevity, and any opinions on these would be great.

Thanks,

Doug,
What is wrong that you think you need a “new” engine?
Best,
Grady

Well...

Since you asked... My 2.2S motor has developed a knock. I pulled the intake valve covers and checked the vlave train, all seems well there, but there is definately a knock that changes with RPM. I have not yet dropped the oil and checked the sump screen/drain plugs for filings (just loaded up with Mobile-1 two weeks ago...).

The car seems to run OK, pulls hard to redline, but you can hear the knock clearly from the drivers seat (stripped interior, you hear everything).

Maybe someone can help me with what this usually means for an engine? How long can I run it like this, before it grenades (I know, tough question).

This is a track car and the class I run in I can have up to a 3.2L, that's where the Supertec question comes in.

Thanks,

Hey Doug,
Sorry to hear about the knock. I had a little knock/tap in my race motor that ended up being a broken valve spring (stock spring). I could only hear it at close to idle because of the open exhaust. I'm sure it got louder, but with a helmet and 103db pumping out the back...you do not hear anything. It was hard to tell until we popped the springs out. Sure enough there was a broken intake spring on the #2 piston. I upgraded to the race springs from EBS. No more worries with the springs anymore. I know you TT that car so maybe it could be the same thing.
Any missed shifts??? (wink)
I hope everything works out.

Mark - thanks for the "heads-up".

Chad - What are you implying with that missed shift comment
Does that sound like something I would do?

Good suggestion on the valve springs. Was there any other evidence that the spring was broke? Was that cylinder firing normally (plug fouled?) etc.. I only ask because I do have two plugs that are different colors than the rest (more carbon) and different than they were previously.

Thanks again,

Hey Doug,
Yes- the #2 plug was different and fouled. This is because at high RPM's your valves are not closing/opening all the way which fouls the mixture. I could barely tell there was anything wrong with the motor under acceleration. I only heard the noise around idle.
What you need to do first is a leak down test. If the leak down test is fine then what you have is most likely a broken spring or two. If the the leak down is bad.... then a valve is bent . I'm not saying you missed a shift or anything. Sometimes the stock springs can just break ...Cuz, I never miss shifts either

Mark: Can you elaborate? I have spoken to a few people who had Supertec rebuild their MFI engines (as opposed to buying rebuilt engines), and no one has had anything but very good things to say. Henry also helped me out of a jam over the phone one time, and I will probably use him to rebuild my engine when the time comes . . . unless I'm missing something that I need to know.

Supertec built my motor and I am very happy with it and how I was treated although it is CIS and not MFI. I would also be interested in information regarding their work as I planned to use them in the future.

I was thinking about buying an engine from them, but now I'm concerned by the warnings. Does anyone have any specifics of a bad experience?

Yeah, we should get JP Involved in this one. He would have some input as well.

Guys, it is just not right to damage a person's reputation and livelihood without giving them an opportunity to defend themselves. If you have some facts/information...post it! Otherwise...you should be ashamed!

Im not damaging anyones reputation here, I'm merely, privately
stating facts to whomever needs it.

I have had first hand experience with whom was mentioned.

Im only stating "facts"
