Alternator Gnd. Strap Location

I have '77 911 I've been sorting out charging problems on and found a broken ground strap from the block to the alternator!

Where does this hook up to on the alternator?

It's attached to the block behind the alternator but the other end is just loose so I can't tell where it goes.
Thanks

You can slip it on one of the studs on the rear of the alternator, between the alt. and the fiberglass air duct that bolts on around the edge. That's how my '75 2.7 was set up.

yup! the ground lugs on the back of the alt are obvious. there will be no little insulating washer, and the body of the alt actually humps up to provide contact with the wire lug. my 75 had two grounding studs.

Where was the strap connected to the block? I have the opposite problem, the strap is connected to the alt but is just sitting on the block. I have no idea how my alt has been working without it.

The ground is attached to the block using the first stud holding the top of case together. Another nut holds it on to the stud.

Is it a special stud? I don't see anywhere on my first case stud where another nut holding the groudstrap would go.

It attaches to 5/1 stud. I think. PM John Kramer to be sure.

It's not a special stud, just the first one in the row.

Okay, I guess the motor was not put back together with this attached. I will loosen that stud and put the stap behind it, I think one end of the strap is open. Thanks.

you dont need to loosen the nut, just get another nut the same size and double nut it with the ground strap in between.

Maybe I'm thinking of the wrong bolt here then. I think we are talking about the case bolts on the top of the motor. These are large bolts that have a capped nut on the end. To get the ground strap in there I have to loosen the bolt, squeeze the strap between the bolt head and case, and then torque it back down.

isnt there some more bolt thread sticking out the end? get another nut that fits and stick it onto the remaining "bit" leftover and sandwich the wire inbetween the existing nut and the new nut. unless your case nuts were perfectly in length where there isnt any leftover threads sticking out. you wont cause anyleaks, but on my motor it leaks enough so i am not taking any chances. i think it is a M10 nut. i should have taken pictures of my double nuts! opps.

I know what you mean but my bolts all have a capped nut on the end that looks like the battle helmet the dwarf wears on lord of the rings. I could replace the capped nut with a regular one and do like you say. The other problem is the strap is connected to the alt on the opposite side of the nut. I would need to turn the bolt around or move the strap if there is another ground point on the alternator. I'll try to post a picture when I get home.

any of the six nuts that hold the alt to the greywhite plastic housing thing will do grounding duties. i just went to a auto store and bought a 10" new grounding strap. it will pretty much reach anywhere i want under there. dwarf helmet? haha that is funny! i love it. have fun. and while you are there, make sure all the connections are shiny clean. i used emory boards from my girlfriend beauty bag and scuffed everything down to shiny new copper. then a smidge of dielectric grease for peace of mind....

Yeah, I was thinking of buying a new ground strap and making sure its long enough to reach somewhere I can ground to. I am working through the triangular area on the left side of the fan where there is usually a cover plate. I don't have a lot of room to work with. I was thinking of grounding it to one of he bolts that holds the fan housing to the shroud. Thanks for you help.
