Cool Tire Rating Listing

Screwing around on Tire Rack I found this page....pretty neat actually. For the money the Yoko AVS ES100's hang right up with some other really great tires. Also interesting is the number of miles driven on the tires that the reviews are provided on! I replaced Firestone SZ's for the ES100s so I will have to provide real world feedback on how the two compare.

I don't know how much credibility I can give to a user survey. Tire Rack also tests some of their tires, under fairly controlled conditions. I'd give a lot more credibility to that.

With user surveys, you'll get guys who have just bought a new set of tires, and notice a huge leap in performance based on the way the old (worn out) tires felt on their car, resulting in very passionate belief that the new brand is much better.

Who are the people submitting results? What are they basing their 'down to the 10th' ratings on? Some kid who likes to think he's a performance car expert because he's watched some movies, gone to some online BBS's, and managed to come up with the monthly payments for a Mitsubishi is not my idea of a tire authority.

According to a young ricer I know, I am a tire authority, because I race Porsches. I told him the ES-100 is a great tire for the money, so that's what he bought.

His Civic is actually very tastefully done. No wings or wild paint. Just a nice looking car.

I would have to say for some of these reviews that have many millions of miles on these tires that they can be taken with some credibility. Especially if you get in and read some of these, for the most part you have some pretty intelligent responses. I actually looked up all of the Porsche owners reviews before I purchased my tires and got some very good insight. And honestly do you think that TireRack is going to totally slam a tire that they sell. Sure it may get just an OK rating but I am sure they don't have many reviews that destroy the tires image or ability to be sold. While these user/consumer reviews are strictly independent.

What criteria on the tire rack listing were you looking at. Some of those tire selections are older models.

I was just looking at overall as the link supplies info on. Yes I actually think this list is ranked hitorically, several models have been replaced with newer models. But interesting nonethenless!

I don't mean to sound pissy, but I just can't imagine how you would rate tires in street testing, no matter how sensitive and tuned-in you might be. How would you get the tires to a consistent temperature? How can you compare without changing out wheels with different tires for the same stretch of road under the same conditions?

I just don't get it.

Even if some of the testing input was vaguely accurate, how do you weed out the clueless survey-takers who simply want to validate their recent tire purchase decision?

Again, I put a lot more faith in the tests put together by TireRack -- and even those I take with a healthy dose of suspicion. Tire Rack sells tires, after all.

I'm with Jack on this one. I always thought the Tire Rack customer surveys were mostly anecdotal ratings. How many owners in these charts have actually compared various new tires for a true comparison? I think some R&T tire tests from a few years ago showed that a tire test was only valid for that particular test vehicle. Too many variables, especially in the Tire Rack data (vehicle make/model, vehicle weight, FWD/RWD/AWD, wheel size and width, tire dimensions, driver, test conditions, etc.).

MHO,
Sherwood
