Simple way to twin plug?
 

Ok, now that I have people's attention...

I was thinking about twin plugging motors and an idea occured to me. I'm sure there is something wrong with it, or people would have been doing it for a long time. The idea is this:

Use a regular 6 plug distributor and split each lead (using a "Y" spark plug wire) to run to two plugs at each cylander. I assume you would have to beef up the coil (use two coils?) to supply enough electricity to fire two plugs properly, and beef up the rotor head and cap as well. So why won't this work?

Some possible reasons why it doesn't work:

No way to evenly split the current between the two siamesed plug wires, so one plug ends up getting the majority of the electricty and the other is realatively useless?

Do twin plug systems fire the two plugs at each cylander at slightly different times?

I pretty sure that's exactly why it won't work - electricity will take the path of least resistance and only fire one plug. Not sure about *when* each coil fires in a dual system, though.

Then why not use the induction of the first wire as the control lead (like on a relay) to a coilpack (or whatever) that will provide the power to the second spark plug wire.

i have an SC. As I under stand it the distributor does two things:

Send a signal to the CDI
act as the switch for each spark plug

When ever the CDI isnt firing it is charging for the next fire...so if you had two CDI boxes you could have twin plg right? wrong! you still need the switch for each spark plug part...

I think that there is probably the technology today to accomplish this. BUT, I'm not sure it would be any easier or cheaper to produce than the options already on the table. Electromotives solution with direct fire and the removal of the dizzy is just too straight foward for many to search beyond it. This solution gets rid of spark scatter, multi dizzies, coil saturation problems and to some it even looks cool. On the high end many of the EFI controllers are now able to do coil on plug now, so we may see more changes.

The best way to twin plug your engine is to buy a 3.6. :D
