Porsche Crest Could this be a 911R engine

I’m looking for information about 906, Carrera 6, 911R engines or clone engines. I think I might have a clone engine.

The 911R 2.0L engine produced 210hp @ 8000 rpm first built in 1967. According to Bruce Anderson, Porsche only built 22 911R. Since these cars competed for several years both here and in Europe, Porsche obviously built a lot of spare engines.

In the photo you can see one of the 911R pistons with the deep valve relief from the engine and a pair of mechanical tensioners.

I'm still researching the background of the engine to determine if it might actually be an original and not a clone. The engine I have is a 1969 E case with the 911R parts. The PO estimated it has been in storage over 10 years. Porsche originally built these engines for the 906 and Carrera 6 and later adapted them for the 911R.

If anyone has information regarding the 906, Carrera 6, 911R engines please contact me. I would like to determine if this engine could be an original. I’ll be selling the engine once I get a better idea of it’s value.

I have a set of 2.0 heads with 911S specs that came with the engine but were in a separate box that I posted here Set of 911S 2.0 Heads - FS . I’m wondering if these could be 911R heads and not 911S.

In the photo you can just barely see the area where the marking 110 is stamped above a horizontal "E". The 110 is about 1.5mm high. In the photo look at the area in the "upside down" V between the valve reliefs on the top of the dome closest to the camera.

Cliff,
A friend of mine has a 906. What info are you looking for? I can get the case number and pics. I know he has numerous spare cams, he might have some pistons i could take a picture of too.

That would be very helpful, especially his knowledge of the engine variants and components. I'm trying to determine if this is an original engine I have or just a built-up using 906/911R components.

I've seen JE forged pistons with the same design but obviously they're not originals. I'd be interested to hear if your friend can put a value to any of these components, I will be selling.

Thanks,

If I remember correctly, the 906 was twinplugged and had a special case. I am sure that there were engines that were later built to 906 specs but the heads pictured don't seem to be twin plugged. I think the 906 ran titanium rods and forged racing rockers that required shims to set valve clearance. 906 cams were centerlubbed, so there would be provisions in the chain covers for them. The rods would not immediately disqualify it but the lack of the others would.Do you have pics to show?

The heads came separated from the engine so I can't even begin to link them with the engine except they came from the same PO. I'll need a couple of days before I can get pics of the rods. Any easy way to identify a titanium rod without removing it from the crank and cleaning? I'm inclined to leave the engine as is until I determine the possibilities.

Check in BA's book for pics and the weight will of course set the rods apart. I don't remember if the 906 crank was anything special like the RSR cranks, maybe just crossdrilled.
