79 3.0 cis, idle problems

I have a 79 3.0 in my 77 and it was fine until a few days ago. I took it to my first DE and it ran great for 2 days. Then on the way home I only notice at a toll booth that the idle is up around 2500-3000. When I got home I let the car cool for a bit and when it starts it idled fine, but after 2 mins its back up high again.
Today I looked for vacuum leaks and tried the carb cleaner trick but found nothing. The throttle linkage is fine and the butterfly thingy goes back to the stop. Anyone know what I can try to fix this?? I want to goto another DE in a week and a half but need to fix this first.

check your control pressures with a pressure gauge! my guess, is that your warm control pressure is low, therefore your air sensor bar is not as restricted as it needs to be. letting the car idle "unbridled". if so, it is an easy fix, new Warmupregulator. you dont want to just guess on this one, the WUR is pricey for your car.

AAV stuck open and not closing in 2-3 minutes with 12v source or heat would cause a fast idle while hot.

The AAV is right next to the number five intake manifold. If your car appears to stick at a fast idle again when nice and hot give it a good rap or two with a hammer and see if the idle drops.

Lots of other diagnostics... use Search "AAV bad"

I second Tsuter's suggestion. Sounds like a classic example of the AAV sticking open.

on a turbo, it's at the end of one of the hoses that come off the right side of the intercooler. visible under the air filter housing. check the plug for power and ground. tap on it with a screwdriver handle to see if the idle drops a bit. see if the vacuum retard hose on the ignition distributor came off.

Thanks for all the help guys! I fixed it this morning and now it runs great. I tried isolating the aar first and it would run fine so I removed it to find that it was open. I checked with my meter and found the connections to act like an open circuit and the thing rattled when I shook it. I know the part numbers are a bit different bit the one off my old 2.7 fit and seems to work fine. So I guess the problem is solved for now????
