After actually rebuilding one of these motors here's what I'm convinced builds HP.
Cams, compression(this includes artificial compression such as a turbo) and cubic inches. All the rest is just equipment to facilitate the above.

to have spent a not insignificant sum of money to have a 911 that sounds really cool to have a cleaner engine compartment (assuming a K&N cone filter) a few more hp than you had before, but not many These motors including intake and exhaust are pretty highly developed, getting hp out of them is not easy. The most important thing that you added was the premuffler. The muffler will probably just make more noise, and the K&N has been rumored (I think there was a test with dyno results) to actually lower hp.

Well I'm not looking for anyone to say 40HP or anything, I mean I did notice a difference when I did the mufler alone so I'm satisfied already. The Premuff is being installed as we speak. So i expect a little more spank in the rear around 4pm when I pick her up.
I just want to be able to throw out a number when someone ask about how much HP I have.

I just installed a premuffler last night along with a new O2 sensor. Now, my '87 has 107K on it, and I'm pretty sure the cat was the original, and the O2 sensor probably was too. So any changes regarding those two items had to improve performance.
I noticed quite a difference after the install. Of course Fabspeed tells me 14HP from the premuffler alone, I find that very hard to believe. But considering how old everything was (I'm sure the cat was clogged up tough, and the O2 seemed non functional), I may have gotten close to that. Who really knows, and honestly I don't care. I do know my car runs better today than it did yesterday.

Smithers: did you have sport mufler on it? Is it louder now? If so, much louder?

Now in 993 land ...
|
It may *feel* faster, because it is louder. Before the next mod, go to the dyno or buy at least a G-tech meter. I agree with others, the power you released with your modifications is probably marginal.

I doubt it is marginal. I am SURE I am in the 10HP range at the least

No sport muffler, original. Not too much louder at all. I actually was a bit disappointed by the lack of loudness.

I dynoed before and after with my Euro style pre-muffler and gained 7-8 HP at the wheels. I also did a few tests with an aftermarket sport muffler vs. OEM and the sport muffler (can't remember the brand - maybe Dansk or Borla) actually lost a few HP.
So you probably gained from 5-10 HP at the wheels (depending on whether your muffler helped or hurt). Also, I am told the the pre-mufflers that are shaped like the OEM cat pipe (as opposed to the straight through cat bypass deals) are much better for gaining HP. Your car is something like 207 stock. So Eric's statement of 215 is right on. A chip should help you quite a bit more as the 84-86 cars were not really optimized very well. If you really want to know, schedule some dyno time.
