Now that I think about it...did the 86 have the newer dash vent style? The procedure I described works on 78 to 84 I know but at some point later the dash vents changed.

The '86 dash was the first year for the larger center vent.

The vent slid right out as you suggested. No hassles, clips or any further steps were needed.

Getting the dash out is a beast. I'm thrilled it's done.

I'm getting ready to pull my dash from a '89 Targa. Is there a schematic or instruction document highlight bolt locations. It would be great to not have to hunt and peck. I'm changing out a blue vinyl pad for black. Any thoughts on refurbish versus purchase new, and which suppliers to use?

Any other advice would be greatly appreciated!!!

I am thinking of tackling this as well. My dash is in fairly good condition except for the big warp in the center of the dash. It has popped free from the vent. What is best way to fix warp?
