friend's car. he already bought it. i guess he got his panties all bunched up. he told me the ppi came back with exactly 175 (psi) at every cylinder. does that sound right? i thought there should be some variation. hell, this isnt the space shuttle.
cliff btw 88 carrera. maybe an 87. they didnt consult with me.

When I had the PPI done on my 1983SC last year with 97000 miles on it I had 5 cylinders at 175 and the 6th at 170,when I showed up for the results my mechanic said "buy it",I did and she runs very strong.

I may be wrong, but good compression does not mean you have no problems. When I bought my 88 Carrera, compression test was very good - over 165 - 170 on all cylinders, as I recall. As months past I found I was adding a quart of oil every 400 miles and finally took it in for a top overhaul. Mechanic who did the overhaul (Fischer Motors in Chicago) said the valve guides were shot and it had two bent valves.

Regarding the compression test, the important thing is that you want to gather consistent readings across all of the cylinders so no worry there.
What does the leakdown look like? Wayne states that the most comprehensive test that you can perform on your engine is a leakdown test. |

If there's a problem, the leak down willl help isolate that problem with respect to whether it's a valve (int or ex) or rings. If I had good compression, I would see no need to go any further. Neither a leak down nor a compression test will detect worn guides unless the guides have contributed to valves having gone bad. And now we're back to where we started.
When we did leak downs on kart racing motors, we did the whole motor to determine if there were any induction leaks, but that isn't done on a multi cyl motor commonly that I know of. I'll bet the race guys do this though. Maybe Grady will weigh in on this. |

so it isnt strange that all 6 cylinders were bang on at 175? i guess i expected some variation.
