911 Gearbox help needed

Hello gentlemen:

I've dropped the powertrain out of my 914 again and am now tackling the second-gear-synchroless transmission. this gearbox is a bit of a mutt - case number 911 301 101 0R, diff cover 911.301.101.0R. I was surprised to find a 911 box in the car.

Can anyone tell me what I have?

...or rather had. this 'box has a 914 tailshifter (unused) housing on the ... er, front, and has been converted to a 914-style side-shift as well.

Also, the box behaves as if it has a limited slip (or no-slip) differential. How can I test that this is working properly?

Many TIA, Dave.

Wow, I can't help, but I'm dying to hear the answer.

How does the tranny act that you say it seems to be LSD? What does it do specifically?

Turn one tire the other goes the same way? the other way? doesn't turn at all?

The "911" refers to the tranmission model. The "915" box came out in 1972. 911's came with "901", "911" (I guess) and "915" gearboxes over the years. I think "jluetjen" has a "911" gearbox in his car, perhaps he'll chime in.

911 gearboxs coincide with the '70-'71 years.....

had the"pull" clutch before the 915

many parts of the 901, 914, and 911 gearboxes are interchangeable...You just need to take it apart....and see what you got..

open it up and see if you have an LSD...

rebuild from there

That was quick - thanks!

Yup, the wheels don't counter-rotate when one (wheel) is turned on a hoist. Turn one, the other turns the same way. The car is a 914/6 GT replica, but currently with a hopped up 4-banger. It had been a six conversion and was raced at some point in the past, and I expect that that was the origin of the gearbox.

When driving, it is impossible to get one wheel to spin, (I also have a rear swaybar) and the car does understeer a bit when accelerating hard through a corner, though I'm not sure that's unusual.

Though mostly dedicated to my Lotus restoration, I have some pics of the car at www.syer.net
