911 iPod Mounting?

Hey all,

Can people post some pics of where they are mounting their ipod? I just got a system installed, and I am looking for a spot to mount the iPod. My first thoughts are some double sided tape to mount a bracket on the left-most portion of the glove box, but then I can't really see the screen. What i would LIKE to do is get rid of the useless clock and fabricate something where the ipod could tuck into that little nook. That way, I could see the screen right through the steering wheel, and not take my eyes off the road. Other than that, I'm looking for creative ideas with "boom" arms, or something along the lines of a custom console that would mount it. Thoughts?

Thanks in advance,

mike

I've already converted my ashtray to a change holder by cutting and grinding it, and hitting it with that soft fluffy stuff they use in OEM applications. But I'll look...

Just my preference , but a Phatnoise (www.phatnoise.com) works much better and can be mounted under a seat or in the trunk.

What about something like a universal cell phone holder?

Also, Ram Mount makes some very innovative mounting devices.

Good luck!

Ummm...yea. Already have the iPod, so that's not an option.

You could run the wires through the headliner and have it set into the sun visor where the vanity mirrors are on lesser automobiles. Flip the visor down to change the tunes, then flip it back up when you park so the theives can't even see the thing.

On my to-do list as well.

Had a car kit for my cell phone in my 3000gt.

Sold car, kept kit, changed phones so kit is useless except for the gooseneck and phone cradle mounting plate.

Goose necks can be had for $20-30 from any car audio place. They come in various lengths so rather than worrying about where to put it that does not permanently damage the interior you can floor mount it.

Gooseneck gives you the flexibility to move it around as you need.

Plan on making a larger plate for mine so it accommodates the iPod and new phone.

The Ram Mounts are cool but you can do the same thing with more flexibility at half the price.

I used a mobile phone cradle thing that has a suction cup on the end and a bendy arm (is this gooseneck Scott?). The suction cup mounts underneath my ashtray. It looks ok.

There are some innovative ideas over at ipod Lounge.

Chris,

Sounds like one of these,

The remnants from my cell kit looks like this,

Only difference really is the suction cup vs. screwing it to the tranny tunnel or floor.

I intend on making a larger plate to end up with something like this to hold the iPod and phone,

The pricing on this stuff is cheap enough to just go and buy but I've got all of the bits already and I like little projects like this.

Here's a link http://www.arkon.com/pdamount.html

Who knows, (flame suit on) I may even try to fit a cup holder.

That's the fella. Was in Halfords (UK car accessory store) ans saw one out of the packagining. I tried my ipod on the offchance it worked. It does the job but I quite like the idea of having the proper dock installed in the car.

I like the sun visor idea. The current iPods are so thin, they're barely thicker than the visor itself. I wonder if you could buy a donor visor from a junkyard, cut an iPod-sized hole on the inboard side, and essentially embed the iPod in the visor. Then run the wiring up the A-pillar. The iPod would be invisible when the visor is in the up position, but visible when the visor is in the down position.

I have my iPod in the ashtray. It works fine, the screen is a little hard to read but I usually just pick a playlist when I get in the car and then don't fiddle with it.

The various gooseneck devices don't appeal to me, because you've got to remove and replace the iPod every time you exit and re-enter the car.

Edit: duh, I see that what I wrote is exactly what someone else had already suggested. Sorry, thought I was being original.

I put double stick tape on an extra belt-mount that I had, and mounted it to the left of the heater controls, in between the steering wheel. It's temporary, but it's in a much better place than it was.

I'll shoot some pics.
