CV joint and shaft orientation

After I took my CV's off the shafts I realized there is an orientation to the CV's even if it doesn't matter. Then the shaft has a small hump towards one end for some reason. In any case I want to re install the drive shafts just like they came from the factory. So what I'm hoping is someone has a 79-84' 930 turbo that can verify the orientation of the CV's and shafts for me and let me know.

Thanks,

Brent

Not sure about the hump (I labeled the axle orientation before I took them out). But I thought they were symmetrical.

What I can add is that on my SC the groove on the CVJ body was to the outside.

The other way you can tell on the CVJ is that you will most likely be able to see a silhouette of the retaining ring on the side of the CVJ that face out.

Don't forget that the curved washer faces concave towards the CVJ.

No concave washers on the 930 CV's. I believe that the orientation does not matter. The hump on the axle is for retaining the small end of the boot. I'm also with Chris in thinking that the side of the joint with the ridge is closest to the end of the axle (but shouldn't matter).

I really don't know the purpose of that little hump on the shafts (there must be a reason)but when comparing the CV's it was obvious they were different if you change them around. The two CV grooves (each axle assembly) should be either facing each other or away from each other. That might be an easier way to look at it. So the groove will be closer to the trans flange and the wheel flange or to the inside facing the boots.

Thanks

If you look at the center of the CV that actually goes on the shaft you will see one side is smooth and the other has a raised circular area. The smooth side goes to the outside of the shaft.

No, but I'm confused too, can someone with a 77-84' 911/930 turbo please call me. This isn't rocket science.

Sounds like it all answered above.

the groove in the CVJ is closest to the the wheel and the tranny respectively.

What car mad is talking about is the inner race to the CVJ. The two faces are not the same. One face is flatter than the other.

FWIW this is all consistent with my SC.

OK, so what about the CV closest to the wheel? Is the groove closer to the wheel or the trans.?

An 83SC is different from a 83' 930 turbo since the part #'s are different.
