Me, my 911, and the Universe

So it's a gorgeous day in Chicago and I decide to park my daily driver 944, skip the Rolls-Royce and take the 911SC. Windows down, stereo up, top off, enjoying the weather and the last bit of good driving along the lake-front before rush hour hits full steam. Someone cuts me off just before a light because it is very important that they be 13 feet ahead of me, and I hit the brakes, too late to shift too neutral so I stall out. Shift to neutral, turn the ignition key...and it comes off in my hand. Yep, it didn't break when I opened the doors, not when I started the car, not when I went to the car wash, but waited until I'm sitting in traffic on Lake Shore Drive to say "Hey, let's screw with Emanuel."

Embarassing as hell.

Luckily, someone in an SUV behind me gave me a quick push (thanks,. dude); I popped it into gear to start it and finished the drive to work, where I borrowed a young lady's nail clippers to fish the broken key out of the lock. I always carry a spare key, so I was then able to put the windows up and lock the car, back in business.

Emanuel

In your 'moment' of exictement, you probably grabbed the key a little harder than usual. Glad it all worked out.

Those "moments" always get you. Like the time my brother had one. Stalled my 911, and in the "moment" jammed it into reverse and almost punched it. Fortunately, he's not an idiot and caught his mistake "just in time" (<2 feet from the bumper behind us).

I thought keys only break off when Godzilla or T-Rex are after your butt.
You got off light, Emanuel

Not to hijack the thread but I have noticed my key can be pulled out of the ignition while the car is running! Is this normal?
Thanks

Should have disengaged the clutch when you hit the brakes. No need to shift into neutral.

Holy crap! I would've figured the SUV would've run right over the top of you according to most of the posts on this board!

Huh - maybe he was trying to run me over, and I misinterpreted?
