Why fo the purists not like v8 conversions?
? is it just because it isnt a porsche motor or are there real reasons?

Search the forums and you'll find the answer.

You should talk to the guys in the 914 forum. This conversation won't end up with people on fire and first degree burn over there. :)

Like I said, use the search.
The weight of the v8 screws up the Porsches weight distribution. You'll probably end up with a fast car that spins out on corners. For the money you'd be better off with a 3.6 Varioram or something. You'd also be able to actually sell the car one day if you wanted to. |
Hi,
Have you actually checked out the weight of the "heavy" v-8's. A chevy weighs somewhere around 500 lbs, while a 5.0L Ford weighs about 460 lbs with cast iron heads. Knock 40 to 50 lbs off when the heads are aluminum. Now go to Bill Verburg's chart and check the weight of that 3.6 varioram. Just trying to help. Thanks, Pat |
why do you want a Porsche?
A large part of the vibe of the 911 is the flat 6 engine. It doesn't sound like anything else. Add that into aircooled (assuming '98 or older) and rear engine, along with classic lines and you've got one of the finest and most recognizable cars ever made. To replace the flat 6 with a bigger flat 6 offends some purists, but is tolerated (and suggested) by a lot here. But to remove the flat 6 "heart" of the car and replace it with anything else...well, then it just isn't the same. Actually I think some V8s are lighter, so the weight distribution isn't the main reason. The V8 does result in a slightly higher CG though I think... |
WATER SUCKS

Just get a Camaro and a mullet. Same thang and a lot less trouble.....
|
Actually a small block chevy doesn't screw up the weight distribution of a 911 that much. They are lighter than a turbo motor, less complex, more powerful, etc.... There are lots of positives to a small block chevy, but taking a flat 6 out to put a small block in is a little weird. I think I'd rather just build a camaro or chevelle or something. It seem to me that building a 911 conversion RIGHT will end up pretty expensive, or you can go cheap and build a car that is not very well engineered which is part of the appeal of these things.
It's kind of like a fake rolex, some are nearly as good as the real thing and some are junk. The "junk" end of the scale is probably very heavy. Either way, the important thing is that you like what you have. |
Short of the motor weight, that's EMPTY there is the water routing issue, there is the weight distribution issue, there is the MAJOR bad karma issue... ETC, ETC...
What is the deal with the V8 Hard-0n??? Is it becuase the V8 is SUPERIOR to the flat six? Not hardly. I own a big V8 in my truck where it belongs. Or a Vette or something like that. My dad's 65 vette is one Badass mo-fo. I wouldn't drop one in a 911 just like I wouldn't drop a flat 6 into a 57 Chevy. It's not natural... |

What a great idea - a thread on V8's in 911's. I'm pretty sure this is one subject that hasn't been adequately discussed on this board yet ........
