Dansk 2-in, 2-out on 3.6 conversion: lotsa "drone" - sport muffler better?
I've been running a Dansk SS 2-in, 2-out muffler on my 914/6 3.6 with Busch headers for about 1000 miles now, and there is just too much "drone". It's also pretty (very) loud, which I don't mind so much, but from 2000-3000 rpm at partial throttle the car resonates/drones very badly. It feels like your head is going to explode.
So, I'm considering: (a) sport muffler (dual center out) OR (b) OEM style 2-in, 1-out Any opinions? Is the sport muffler still loud but no drone? Is the OEM style too quiet? Thanks, Steve |

Hi Steve:
LOL,...What's too quiet for some is too loud for others: sound pressure levels are totally subjective. As you know, 914/6's are louder than 911's, even with the same mufflers. I'd agree with you that sport mufflers with more than one outlet are louder than single outlet ones and further, mufflers with 3" tailpipes are louder than ones that are stock sized. The old factory dual-outlet Sport muffler (center outlets) is quite raspy, but doesn't drone. The stock dual-in, single-out OEM muffler is the quietest one and has no drone at all, although it might be too quiet for your taste,.... ![]() Personally, I prefer the single outlet (3") Monty Sport mufflers for their nice sound, lack of resonance and superb build construction. As inconvenient as it might be, you should seek other 914/6 owners (preferably with a 3.6!) with different mufflers, go for a ride and make this decision with YOUR ears. Given how we all differ on this subject, this is a call that you should make for yourself.

Thanks for the input. Sounds like I should do some more hands/ears on research. I'll live with things a bit more until I can hear a 914 with the sport muffler (dual center out). That sounds like it may be a good option.
