Do you think there are fewer 911's in the market place now?

I’ve been kicking around selling the targa and getting something newer again. It appears to me that there are fewer cars for sale off of a sudden. There used to be 30 or so new listings for 911’s on Ebay per day, now there is frequently lass then 10. Has anyone else noticed this? Could we be seeing some “demand push” inflation in the prices?

I don't know but watching the Barrett Jackson Car Search show on Speed last night, the "expert" estimated that a decent but not excellent 1968 911L would go for $20k+. I thought that was kinda steep. I was thinking more like $10k.

Anyway, in my part of the country (out in the middle of no where from a Porsche standpoint), you rarely see 911s for sale any more. Maybe 6 or 8 a year in the local area.

I was just using Ebay as a quick gauge and the number of new listings has fallen off a cliff. Just seeing if anyone has noticed that in their local markets. Since I left the stock exchange floor I now have a 17-mile commute and am thinking about getting something with lower mileage since I’ll be using it everyday.

Vehicle availability will have cycles depending on events and seasons.

I'd also assume the overall availability of any one model will decrease year after year as a percentage the vehicles are crashed, or taken out of service for major mechanicals (and not repaired). Depending on age, I'd be willing to estimate that number could be as high as 2-5% (out of every 100 running '80 SC's on the road today, maybe 4 won't be on the road a year from now?).

Wait another week or two, and you'll see a different set of vehicles for sale.

At the moment, there are 394 911s on eBay.

15 66-73,

42 74-83

...and the rest are later models.

This is about typical. When prices go up and cars are scarce, the ones that have been sitting in the garage for 10+ years are dusted off and put up for sale. There are some real ugly ducklings showing up now.

I dont think there are fewer 911s out there in fact its a buyers market. I am always looking and see them everywhere , auto trader, ebay, cars.com etc...what we have is a lot of cars that need work and sellers asking too high of prices for these cars....

How is it a buyers market if people are asking "too high of prices for these cars"?

My opinion people are holding on to the older 911's more and more as prices go up. There are also fewer to restore as time goes by, and we see more crap cars with high prices. The early 911 is the next 356, soon there will be few 356's to restore and shops and people will start restoring more 911's.

How much do you expect a 10 or 15 thousand dollar car to really go up in value? 500 bucks? You dont really think a 10 or 15 k car is going to go up 2 or 3 k do you?

I just noticed that there seems to be fewer new listings on Ebay these days.

I'm afraid that our beloved cars (1989 and down)are quicklying going by the way side. The really good ones arn't for sale. I know that I don't even want to know how much I've spent on my 75 but I know that it's not for sale, now or later. A good SC (good ppi) is around $12K , This is the turning point in this cars life.A pelican will buy this car and love and charish it.The pelican will spend money ,time and effort on this car and it will not be for sale. The other side is sad,The new owner discovers the cost of care and feeding a 911. This once wonderful car is now on the road to the end. Sadly it cost as much per mile (IMO) to have a older 911 as it a newer one. It will be a some time befor the scale balances it self. Just my thoughts, Randy

Yes, did you not see BA market report for this year. I don't expect an increase of $2K a year but even just $500 for 10 years is a $5000 increase.

I know the place doesn't have great prices but have you seen the prices European Collectibles is asking and getting. There are tons of cars that never even hit the web site, there are buyers out there with money to burn. Some of the cars bought sight unseen.

One more thing if we don't think our cars are valuable and will go up in price no one else will either.

Look, they may very well go up in price, I was being realistic. European Collectibles 25k for an 88 targa with 98k miles, he he he .... thats a good one. BD I follow your example but if you use the car you cant expect the same increase each year. Heck I would sell my targa in a second for 25 or even 24.

The sellers will start to realize they are asking too much and they will have to go down. Thats a buyers market in a sense. But there are too many cars out there that need too much work and too high of asking prcies...

Something else to consider. If you look at the market for 356...they bottomed, then started back up, and are now higher than ever before.
I think although there are more available...911s will hold and rise in value after a period of bottoming in the market as well. The bad ones will be parted out, and the good ones will become harder to find. Mine is worth about what I paid for it, 11 years ago.

So my question to all is when and what is the bottom? I think the bottom just passed for pre '73 cars.

I guess its a bit of a waiting game...I would agree with you on the older cars from what I have seen in the marketplace. I know the value of my brothers 2004 S4 cabrio will drop more than my car is worth in a couple of years. Not knocking owning one of those just a different mind set ( and wallet)

It may be a seasonal thing too. Maybe more P-car owners want to enjoy the car for one more summer before putting it up for sale again.

For example - Convertables like my Jeep Wrangler become a high comodity in the summer here in California, then in the winter no one want to buy it.

I agree that there seems to be a tightening supply. I received the new PML yesterday and it's pretty brief.

Ebay is downright scary for buying--the anti-buyer's market because of the ease of viewing and amount of traffic.
