Stereo install - Should I be worried?

Pulled out old radio with hopes of installing a new CD player.

the plug in the photo (that plugs into the rear) used to be part of a thick black cable. Should I be worried? gut instinct tells me i have a lot more work ahead of me.....

That is for your antenna signal - you made need to purchase an adapter and rewire this piece back on as you will need it on your new deck.

I don't know if you can see it clearly but this is what my cables looked like after I pulled the old stereo out -

84 porsche, how did you remove the stereo without that metal rectangular frame in the dashboard?

Mine came all out. (see pic below)

That Gray Box looks like an alarm brain to me. Not for sure though what is the Brand name on it?

Is that UNGO maybe or UNCO for sure? UNGO is a brand of alarms.

ok, it's UNGO then.

now it makes sense....this was on my keychain (from previous owner) so i threw it away because alarm never worked.

i'll just leave it alone then, and just replace all the wiring associated with stereo.

btw, anyone know a good source to buy a now obsolete Nakamichi stereo? (model CD 45z). i prefer the looks/price of this model over the new model CD400...
I looked on Ebay and a few other sources, no luck.

If you didn't know that was the antenna lead....

and you were working on my radio, I'd be plenty worried!

that particular connection was on the verge of disintegration anyway so i couldn't really save it.
besides, i'd rather tackle this project, or any other project for that matter, than to put my faith in some teenage kid down at the Tweeter/Bestbuy center.

I'd recommend that you remove (or have a good shop do it) all of the wiring mess that came with the alarm system. You'll have a much cleaner under-dash appearance and it will make it easier to locate wires, fuses, etc... if you get rid of unnecessary wires. A local stereo/alarm shop removed all of my alarm wires for $35.00 and it made for a much cleaner under-dash.

my thoughts exactly. it is a wiring mess right now...they need to go and that's what i intend to do.

boy, this stereo install has turned into an alarm dis-install....

btw, how much weight savings will i see/any performance gain?
will post more pics along the way

ok, i removed all the connectors from the alarm "brain" (grey box, not shown in pics, currently in the garbage can).

I also cut the grey wire going into the box (wire on the right in the pic) and miraculously, the car still starts.
I must be blessed today.

now where do these thousands of wires go?

advice needed.....all these wires are bundled into 1 black harness that snakes over to underneith the drivers side. Can i just cut it and be done with it? (I hate alarms)

looking at the relay attatched to that harness it looks to be a starter kill.......if you cut it the car will not start....it'll need to be reconnected (the stock wiring, this is a "loop").......best to trace each wire and disconnect individually so to be sure the stock wiring is intact where the connections were made.

That's why I had the alarm/stereo shop do the "surgery", I was afraid the car wouldn't start again. There must have been 4lbs of wires, relays and "black boxes" for that old alarm. I'm glad it's gone!
