205-50-15s on 15x8 - your thoughts?
Tire rack lists that the maximum width for 205-50-15 Yokohamas as 7.5 inches. Because of a rubbing issue with the 225-50-15s I now have on my car, I've been thinking of installing a spare pair of 205-50-15s on the 8-inch rims.
I know that the tire width will be about a half-inch less in diameter, but the sidewall would be stiffer, and turn-in sharper - which would be a plus IMO. Otherwise, what would be the negatives? TIA

I think you had better stay away from curbs.

There is the potential for the tire bead to pull inwards when compressed if the rim is not wide enough. Also if you should hit a pot hole, road transition, etc. the normal compression and rim protecting tire bulging that the tire sees will not happen. The pothole, transition, etc will impact the rim.
Put them on and see what it looks like. Perhaps some others here have installed a 205 on an 8" rim.

Believe the tire engineers. They are conservative but for a reason

205's are just about perfect on 7's.
It sounds like your quest for 8's just may not be "meant to be". Or...you just need to pull and roll those fenders more ![]()

sounds a tad small - why not try a different make/size?

Somewhere TireRack also mentioned that there are several occurences where car makers have approved 1/2 over or undersize tires with repect to the rim width guidance from tire makers. I think you should be ok.

Dave at TRE ran 205s on 8s for a while; said it worked quite well on the track.
Chris: I'm really not too concerned. The 8s will stay as will the 225s. The rubbing is not shredding the tire apart, so I'll be alright for a while. I've got some suspension sorting to do, so we'll see what happens after that. In short, there's more than one way to skin a 911 cat. ![]()
