Gas Overflow, Why?
 

For years now, I can only fill my 1972 911T gas tank half full. If I put more than half a tank in, gas will liberally run out in the engine compartment, out of a thin metal tube on the left engine compartment wall, near the fuel pump. If I have just short of a half tank, and I get on it hard, gas will again get washed back and it comes out of the tube. Can I cork the tube? Lengthen the tube? Thank you in advance.

I don't have a solution for you, just wondering how you dare driving around with that for so long. A little spark and your car is history.
Perhaps it's your fuel return line.

that line in the engine compartment is the stock fuel line, figure out how the fuel is getting to you motor, I am guessing that someone has modified it, I would for starters put some fuel line on this metal tube and jam a bolt or something in the open end, pout a hose clamp on it and seal it off.

If you are not mechanically inclined, get it into a shop to sort this out.

Post a picture of exactly where the leak is coming from.

The two most likely sources are fuel line and the evaporative emissions system.

I suspect someone has removed the vapor recovery system form your 1972. You need to find the original parts aor at least rig up something. See:

Its fixed with bolt in the fuel line to plug to line.

The mechanic took the gap cap off to do a pressure test while the engine was running. I found a puddle of gasoline on the ground, under the left front gas tank area. Does removing the gas cap while the engine is running , cause fuel to flow to the ground from the overflow tube?
