Unhappy Aaaahhhh, my car is gone!!! (sold)

Well, sold my car today. Needed to do it, but really not happy about it. Not only did I love the car, but I also haven't been without a car since I was 18, and that feels weird too. Fortunately we have 2 other cars, but there's also 4 drivers in the family. Oh well, looking at miatas to tide me over for the next year or so until I can get back behind the crest.

Have a moment of (not silence) flat 6 symphony for me today in memoriam.

Oh, and you guys are stuck with me the entire time until I get my next 911. If I thought I was living vicariously through the exploits of Jack O, et al before....

Glad you're planning on sticking around Steve. Please post a pic of your interim sports car when you buy it. There are quite a few of us here who think the Miata is a good alternative to our beloved P-car.

I saw a spec Miata race at Laguna this weekend. I have to admit, it was pretty darn cool.

Sorry to hear that the Carrera is gone. But life is long, and there are always new opportunities for new cars.

Being Carless must feel very strange. Glad you found a buyer and that you're going to continue to contribute to the forum. Good luck on your hunt for a replacement and hope you can get back in a real car soon!

Last hardcopy of Road & Track had a great article about a 25 hour race using spec Miatas. Pretty damn cool little cars...

I drove my friend's Miata the other night. It was a lot of fun. It's no Porsche, though. His car is bone stock and the suspension is very, very different. I got the back end to wag out a couple of times, it was a blast. I felt that it "topped out" in each gear a little quick as well. But if I had a lose my 911, it would make an adequate substitute.

Of course, you'll have to change careers. Hairdressers can make a good living too, you know.

Or interior decorators...anyway, I think if I lost the P-car the replacement would be a Lotus Esprit, Ferrari 328GTS or a Aston Martin DB7 (6 cylinder...who can afford the 12?). Miata? No freakin' way. Too common, too boring, too slow.

Sam,

I agree with your thoughts exactly! If you have to get rid of a sports car you might just as well buy another one because you won't be happy otherwise.

If you can find me one of these (actually I'd rather have a '72 Ferrari 365 GTC, a Lotus 7, or a DB6 or earlier, an Austin Healey 3000 or Jag E-type would also be nice) that is about $4000, going to be reliable/dependable, and going to be really cheap to fix when it does break let me know. Yep, I'll be on it like flies on....

.... honey

(what did you think I was going to say?? jeesh )

Actually I don't think most of those cars would make an adequate substitute for the 911, and I think the miata is pretty much the very essence of a sports car, but I know what you are trying to say.

The whole point of this exercise is that I sell the 911 and then replace it with something that leaves me with a decent daily driver and a pocket full of cash.

I'll be back in a 911, it's just going to take a little time.

Ah, one more thing. I have a couple of things for sale.

Coverking, Mosom car cover, put on about 5 times, originally purchase for $189 from Perf Prod (before I saw the light), currently goes for $159. The couple of times it got wet I laid it in the sun to dry, no staining, no mold, no mildew, no funny smells. It comes custom fit for an SC/Carrera flared car with 2 mirrors and no tail. It fits like a condom, no flapping in the wind. It's nearly 100% water proof, breathable, and very thick to protect from twigs, etc...

$100 will include shipping

Colgan Custom bra, in great shape. The previous owner may have used it some, but I haven't had it on the car since purchased. Looking online it looks like they are currently going for $97, this one for $50 plus shipping (for narrow (Carrera/SC fenders) car with Carrera fog light cutouts)

'84-'89 Carrera spare DME relay. I bought this as a spare from our host and never needed it, so it's been in the glove box in a plastic bag. I think I paid $40, it's currently listed at $34. I'll sell you mine for $25, shipping included.

Thanks all.

Steve,

Sorry to hear the car is gone. You can always come by my house for your Porsche fix. Come to think of it, it's about time to pull the engine. How are you with a parts cleaner? My 9 year old is too slow.

miatas, are underpowered. but just like motorcycles, underpowered ones force you to be a better driver. in a competitive way. i have a friend with a miata, that would probably put me to shame. he is insane! but he can drive like a mutha. and he is jobless, i dont think he would make a good hairdresser. but in san fran, i bet he could get a decent "bear" crowd.

Hahah

David, yep, I'll have to get my fix at your house. Through repeated dousings, I have become immune to cleaner, so I can just dive in and really scrub!

I drove a miata for the first time tonight, a few years newer than I'll be looking at seriously, but the handling and feel was great! (the steering was a little too boosted, but it was a 1999, I don't think I'll end up with PS in the year that I buy) It was slow, but not THAT slow. Granted, it was the newer 1.8L 135 hp version, and what I'll be looking at will be the early 1.6L 116hp cars and the first few 1.8L 128 hp cars. I hear that the 1.6L cars are freer revving which I don't mind.

One of those you listed, a 1.6 liter with 158K miles, sold today on Craigslist. The asking price was only $2900! Looked great on pics. I hear Miatas are just as long-lasting as P-cars if well cared for.
