Sold my $1800 911 for $3000. Now it's running and on ebay for $3500!

The car I found for $1800 ( My $1800 '69 911 T ) was sold two weeks later to Redline Service in Tucson for $3000. http://www.redlineservice.com

Now the car is on ebay ( http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2476757629&category=10156&sspagename=STRK%3AMEBWA%3AIT ) for $3500. But, the car runs now and will have a new front suspension pan installed as part of the auction. I'm really tempted to bid on it!

I saw that. I was considering buying your car but "she who must be obeyed" said I couldn't have another project until I finish the track car.

It has happened many times before.

Did you buy the car to begin with?

"Cylinder leakage test was done a year ago and almost no miles since test. "

How can they make that claim if they just purchased the car??

Why did you sell this car? Its a sweet fixerupper and IMO worth $3500....

Buy it up! To live sans 911 is not to live... and the early 911 is so pure and beautiful. Oh how my 74 S is a year too late...

This car has major rust problems. And just think of the rust we aren't seeing.

I don't think you will get it for $3,500.00 You know the car better than anybody and it sounds like they have put at least $500.00 in the car since they bought it from you. I would go for it.
Just don't park it in front of the sprinkler again.

Ah, the joys of the modern internet economy! Since there is no reserve, depending on how the bidding goes, it may be a good deal to buy it back as an improved car. You might find that it's cheaper then having paid them to do the same work in the first place.

Forget it. You didn't want it to begin with when a lot of people here said keep it or sell it here to a Pelican. I saw the offers. You don't deserve the car.

You made your profit, what else do you want?

"...owners manual and receipts dating back to 1975. Cylinder leakage test was done a year ago and almost no miles since test. See results in enclosed photo."

They post a picture of an invoice dated '03 showing this leak down test--Lee, you never mentioned that invoice when you listed it for sale here; did you miss it, or are these sellers lying?

Your original post included the comment, "The owner said it needed a total restoration and it ran when parked 10 or more years ago."

It was parked for ten years but someone had it serviced with a leak-down test just last year?

Something smells rotten.

My "mental accounting" says that if there are no other bids, my net cost would be $500 for: cleaning the fuel tank and lines, new front suspension pan and tank support, new plugs and points, installing new brake hoses, bleeding the brakes, rebuilding both carbs, and the security of knowing that the car now runs and drives. That's a lot for $500.

Milt... you don't know enough about the car, the offers, or me to be passing judgement on any of the above.

There were a lot of records and they were hard to track - many faded or lacking dates/mileage.

I sent Chuck an e-mail and told him that I thought that receipt was from '83 and not '03 (the date just has "4-26-3") He said he was going to do another leakdown test to verify the condition.

They are "going to put in a front pan in mid-May"?

Not if they don't get at least a $4500 bid for it.

If they got it running and driving, they could easily have put more than $500 into it, so that leaves only two reasonable explanations:

* they want to 'cash out' because they found more issues

* they are expecting bidding to go way over $4500

I had to retract my original bid for the car because Lee was honest enough to give me detailed info on the condition of the upper surfaces of the car. It really needs a complete blasting and repaint.

Lee made the right decision in selling it. I think the new owners may now be seeing more clearly, too.

Great job on rescuing a nice old 911, Lee. Nothing wrong with a little profit along the way. It sounds to me like you found a rotting car, bought it, and sold it off to another owner more technically capable once you realized the kind of work it would take to get it back on the road.

Good job.

Let's see...you origianally paid $1,800.00, sold for $3,000.00 therefore a $1,200.00 profit.

They want $3,500.00 so,

$3,500.00 minus $1,200.00 = $2,300.00 is what the car is going to cost you. not $500.00.

Lee.......

1st off, nice score on the car to begin with. The shop that has the car now has certainly done some of the nasty work with gas tank removal, brake lines, weber rebuild etc. At the curent price I think that the car is still a bargain. It isn't clear to me whether the sell price includes front pan replacement( a full replacement vs a patch). Question: can the car be used daily after the pan replacement - with a complete sell price of sub 5k?

The real trouble starts after the 1st 5k is gone. Even after buying waynes books, shopping around for deals, having friends help you with various repairs....if you keep the car and use it long enough( say 2 years) you'll have 10k into the car one way or the other. By then the paint might not look as good and you might be itching to have elective mods done vs the mandatory ones you'll face initially. Once your at the $10-14k range, there are alot of cars out there that MIGHT present a better value in the long run. All depends on what you're looking for.

hats off to you though man - you scored when you found the car and could score again on a buyback......IF you'd get some driving out of it during the next 2 years without grabbing your ankles and opening your checkbook! At near 100 bucks an hour labor rate in my area - no repair is cheap anymore on these cars.

best of luck, and most importantly have fun!

regards -

Jim
