Have you hugged you CIS lately?

With all this anti-CIS propaganda that's being tossed around I thought my beloved CIS deserved a little love.

My bastardized CIS sat for months! Months after a hard weekend of DE driving. I think it sat idle from October to April....not even a crank. The Optima battery not even trickle charged...I was less tank a 1/4 tank since I ran with little gas at the DE.

When I went to fire "Bastard" up for the first time this year, it was two cranks! TWO! Yeah brother that was all it took, and the idle went up like it should, then came down when the cold start bits got warm.

Now why would I want to go fooling with it? More HP and T! Maybe....but when it all works and I know how to tweak it, I have to love it.

Tomorrow morning, I'm going to ciss my CIS! :D

EDIT: I hate this thing that prevents you from fixing any errors in the thread topic once you submit....how the fuch do you huged anything?

CRNT918 05-05-2004 07:43 PM

Keeps on Going!

Adam 05-05-2004 08:31 PM

My 2.7 sits frequently for weeks (even months) at a time. When I hit the key, it cranks for a split second and fires instantly.

(touchwood) ;)

Yes, it's as reliable as a Kia -- aren't you proud?

CIS is not an appropriate fuel system for a sports car. That's the issue.

Rot 911 05-06-2004 05:21 AM

Souk, my '58 Bugeye always starts no matter how long it sits. Of course the starting procedure is a bit more complex. First turn on the ignition to fill the twin SU fuel bowls. Pump the gas about 5-7 times, pull the choke out then give a pull on the ignition switch and vroom!

hobieboy 05-06-2004 05:38 AM

I am with Souk. Have no problem with mine whatsoever so far (finger crossed)...

Though from everything I read & heard, its either black art, s**t luck or magic depending who you are, what you drive, how much you love your car, ...

For me, that's the exact reason why I was hessitant to go EFI. Yes, throttle response could be better, but on the track, just make sure you keep throttle open & you are good :) I don't race on the street, so the 2 sec delay doesn't bother me.

jmz 05-06-2004 05:41 AM

not to hijack, but you ought to hug that optima too.

I let my car sit for the better part of two years. It didn't fire right away ...engine had been in & out etc. But the Optima battery worked w/o any charge at all.

MotoSook 05-06-2004 05:48 AM

Randy, you will have to explain your post or I'm calling you full of ci***** :D

Someone e-mailed me with this tidbit: "it was the only system reliable enough for use on the PFM (Porsche Flight Motor)"

Until I test my car with carbs, EFI and CIS back to back, I can't agree that throttle response leaves much "on the table" sort to speak. I have a carburated motorcycle and when it's on the power curve it moves! When it's not on the power curve...it don't no move so fast...

If I want to get my car to scoot...I keep it in the power band...no disappointments related to CIS.

I was insulting my CIS last year about idle instability, but finally my problems were on the engine (rockers, pistons).

Ok now I have PMO on my SC, but last year I was wrong, CIS was perfect it seems that it only need simple cleaning from time to time.

If it is enough for a turbo engine,....

souk,

i can appreciate the cuddles of your cis, but my mfi system also sat october to april and also started with two cranks... granted my wife was perched over the engine bay with a fire extingisher just in case the cold start system 'lit up', but.... well... now thats a 'sports car' ;)

(today must be trash talk'n thursday)

BS.
CIS is perfectly appropriate for a 70's-80's sports car.
It's good enough for the mighty 930, after all.

MotoSook 05-06-2004 06:34 AM

Derek, my special CIS setting requires that I warn the spousal unit I'm going to start the car in the garage and close the two doors that separate the garage from the living quarters...else, she'll have fits when the house starts stinking like that sweet smell of rich burning CIS idle :D

And when I have my track pipe on, I can spit fireballs...is that "sporty car" enough Randy :D

WUF! WUF!

I'll do you one better, mine sat from October until yesterday and fired up as well...

:D

CIS is not good. Luckily more and more people are beggining to understand this and are thowing out this maze of hoses, plungers and malfunctioning gimmicks and are replacing it with something that is less complicated, lighter and improves both emissions *and* performance.

The "mighty" 930 would be even more mightier if it wasn't for it's crappy foul-flowing intake (dictated by 20kg of CIS crapola on top of it) and giant plunger that sits in the middle of airpath.

It's complicated, it's hard to troubleshoot, it isn't performance-friendly...die CIS die!

Souk,

I think most of the propoganda is generated by the subject lines from CIS owners themselves. They're typically panicked and extreme. That along with the obvious and popular interest in Tony's EFI conversion kind of speaks for itself.

MotoSook 05-06-2004 07:38 AM

"obvious and popular interest" is not scientific enough for moi! :D

I suspect those interested in something other than CIS or Carbs have not spent much time learning about what they have. EFI is cool (don't get me wrong), but CIS has its merits. If the simple things in life are the foundation for aged bliss...CIS will have new fans when the time comes...Sure EFI has some nice features, but wait until all the reports are in and the traitors start fussing about tuning and such...

I'll start "Derek'ing" all those lonely CIS parts and then when the time is right, I'll be selling them for more than Fuchs! :D :D :D

Goran, my orange is still better than your apple :D

I've talked to many qualified Porsche mechanics and speed shop owners who all have the same opinion of CIS - it is by far their favorite fuel injection system. Why? It is simple. It is easy to troubleshoot. It is very reliable.

I have at my disposal the worst gasoline in the world - or at least the U.S. - and have never had a single problem with CIS; neither on my old 2.7 or my 3.0.

Yes, I do like EFI - I admire Noah and TBitz's trailblazing efforts with EFI on SC engines, and of course the sexy beast that is MFI and carbs, etc., is always appealing. Any one of these systems is bound to be more performance oriented and "lighter" than CIS. But damn, I get in my car, turn the key, and it starts without fail. What more can one want. This is just another aspect of what makes the 911 a good dual-purpose everyday driver/track car.

And yes, Souk is correct, throttle response is directly related to the engine staying within its powerband. Between 3,000 to 5,000, CIS motors are as responsive as any others IMO.

Well my apple is still green, but when time comes it will be a mighty nice apple!
