My 74-911 is needing new bumpers and I was wondering if I could take the front bumper off of a 1990 964 C4 and put it on my 911. Does anyone have any experience with this? Will it fit? Would it bolt on okay? Will I have too do any mods to make it fit?

I would rather spend my time trying to get the motor to fit.
Good luck with the bumper.

Stlrj : I found lots on glass bumpers, even on how to make a metal insert for glass bumpers…but I’m trying to find out how to put ‘real’ bumpers from a newer Porsche on a older Porsche and what is involved, if you know of a good thread from the past please refer me too it as I had troubles finding it

found just what i was looking for, posted by David Griswold
(for those that are interested) "Under the cover: The 964 has an internal bumper underneath the covers--you can replace your bumper shocks with late style ones and bolt the factory aluminum bumper on, or I have heard of people cutting the factory bumper ends off so that it fits under the cover. A mistake alot of people make is simply bolting a cover on with no real bumper underneath. Bolting front and rear covers on: The bumper covers themselves attach fairly easy. They bolt to your fenders or quarters and front trunk area. You will need to drill appropriate holes in the bottom edge of the panels. If you don't get all of the support brackets with the bumpers, you will need to fabricate them. These brackets support the bottom corners of the covers and are a must have item. You can also purchase them new from Porsche. Since you will not have the 964 complete underbody panels, you will need to make mounts for the bumper under-trays to properly support them. Heat shields: The rear bumper has a heat shield which keeps the bumpers from warping and the paint from cracking, it also acts to stiffen the bumper cover. Nice to have, not sure how important they realy are. Lights: The rear reflector panel will not directly attach to your pre 964 car. You will need to fabricate a panel for the reflector clips to attach to. You can also buy this piece from Porsche or you can buy an aftermarket piece from any of the places that sell body kits (BW Motorsports...). The rear tailights attach simply and all of the front ones are in the bumper. All of the 964 lights have different electrical plugs than your early style ones. You will need to crimp on new wire ends to your harness. The 964 rear lights and reflectors have ventilation lines to eliminate fogging...you will not be able to hook these up. Rockers and sail panels. These are a little trickier. The factory pieces are attached with a series of clips that have a pin that goes through holes drilled in the metal area of the lower rocker of your car. Sounds simple enough...but, the 964 cars have recesses in the metal rocker area to accomodate the rocker clips. There are several ways to get around this. The rocker covers also have attachment points underneath that you can attach with sheat metal screws. There is one fasterning clip on the lower front fenders, several along the rocker and I think 3 on the sail panel. You will also need a support bracket for the sail panel. Just a note here...You will need to ensure that the sail panels are removable since this is the access point for rear torsion bars and oil cooler thermostat. Exhaust Tips: depending on your exhaust, the exhasut tip may not allign properly with the rear bumper cover. If you have dual exhaust, the drivers side section does not have the appropriate exhaust cutout. This upgrade is not all that difficult. My recomendation is to use all factory parts and mounting procedures as used in a 964. Replace all of the rubber (smile, top edge of rockers and sail panels, top edge of rear bumper cover--3 pieces...). Use a bumper under the cover! I have just stripped a '90 C4 and can post pictures of all of the factory covers, bumpers, brackets, mounting points, etc. if their is interest." does anyone else have any input? |

I dont know if you put it on, but i would buy all the brackets behind the bumper also, mount all the brackets to the bumper then slide it up to the car and see what brackets you have to make, i used a fiberglass piece and looks great, Kevin

For clarity...I didn't perform the modification I had asked about.
