Ortega Highway in Orange County

I am thinking about doing this run on Saturday, anyone have any comments or suggestions.

Great run, take it easy there are several motorcycle riders and others getting a little crazy cutting corners out there on Ortega. Save the speed for some smaller less crowded roads.

Stop at Thortons Winery in Temecula, great spot to have lunch and relax.

Watch the bikes, and make sure you are off of it before dark. Plus, remember that part of town is more trucks than canyon carvers...

Lots of cops lately. Have you driven route 2 (Angeles Crest) out of la Canada? Or either of the mountain roads going up to Idyllwild? Those are both great drives with phenomenal views. Route 2 tends to have more motorcycles and sometimes a few cops, but the roads to Idyllwild are often unpatrolled. Whichever route you choose, have fun and be safe!

This looks like some of the SoCal Crowd - we should plan a driving run on one of these roads. Orange County has plenty of hills and twisties.

I drove Ortega every day twice for a year. Very good road for driving but Sat is better, and early early morning (8AM) is best. Be very considerate of motorcycles, there are those on that road. Watch the blind corners. Watch the cops around either ends of Ortega.

Have fun.

I second the post about watching for law enforcement. I work in San Juan Capistrano and the road is heavily patrolled, especially on weekends when all of the bikes are out. Be careful driving through town before getting to the hills as this is considered a "double fine zone" and not a day goes by that I don't see someone pulled over. The cops have a couple of really good hiding places.

Have fun!

If you really want to have fun on this road you need to hit it at 7am.

I was going to add that it is a comuter road. maybe less so now that they have added the toll road from Foothill Ranch to Corona. But still, the Ortega is a working man's road.

I have been gettin' with it up there and not holding anyone back in my pickup and have been passed on the outside of a blind corner by a knee dragger. I could have given him a hair cut as he went by without undoing my seat belt. That is if he didn't have his helmut on. Full racing leathers too. He was gone out of sight in 2 turns.

There's only about 8-10 miles that I will book on. The rest is all posted speed limits for me. Way too many cops.

I drive the road every day. The office is in S.C. During the week it's become a short cut to the south o.c. and a lot of people use the road. The toal road increased the fee and over night the traffic doubled. I don't drive the road much on the weekend, but they opened a new place called Hells Kitchen near the top. Looks nice. I second the views of the others... and let me add ...stay to the right of your lane and never ...never... ever cross over the yellow line to go fast. Every month some poor soul learns that lesson the hardway. Most of the crashes Iv'e seen are from cars crossing the line because of speed.

The drive was fun, there was lots of traffic, so speeds never got up. I did pull over a few times to get away from the pack. I notice Hells Kitchen This was taken at the base of the 74 on the Riverside side.

Ralph (Carerra3.5L)-
You wouldn't happen to have a silver coupe with racing seats and the interior door panels removed would you? If it is you, then we work in the same office complex on Calle Arroyo in SJC.

JP911,

Nope, that's not me. My '88 is dark blue (marine blau) with linen interior and silver BBS wheels. You should be able to spot me, I'm the one with intermittent blue smoke coming out of the Dansk exhaust at stoplights due to the infamous valve guide issue. Hence the 3.5L twin-plug in progress.

My work is between the post office and city hall on Paseo Adelanto. There is someone who has a white Carrera sitting on the street in the los rios district next to the train tracks and every now and than on the drive to work I see someone in a beautiful early 70's blue 911 coming out on Ortega from one of the residential tracts.

Ralph
