1st Gear Problem With 84 911

LATELY I HAVE BEEN HAVING TROUBLE GETTING MY TRANS INTO FIRST GEAR WHILE AT A STAND STILL. NOW I CAN'T ENGAE FIRST GEAR AT ALL. I ADJUSTED THE LINKAGE FROM THE TIPS GIVEN BY PELICAN AND I CAN ENGAGE EVERY GEAR (2-3-4-5 & REV), BUT I CAN'T GET IT INTO 1ST. I WOULD REALLY APPRECIATE SOME HELP.

THANKS,
BILL

Has the transmission ever been overhauled? When it would go into first did it do so without grinding if the car was moving? If you have addressed the shift coupler issue and it still won't go into first, the synchro hub (dogteeth) for first gear may have failed with allows the first gear synchro ring to expand to the point where the the operating sleeve (slider) will not go over it and permit engagement of first gear. If this has happened there are likely fragments of broken first dogteeth loose in the tranmission. It would be prudent to look at the drain plug magnet (make sure you can loosen the fill plug first before removing the drain plug) for evidence of broken dog teeth (look for little triangular shaped bits) and also remove the the shift fork cover on the bottom (to check for debris) once you have drained the transmission oil. If fragments are loose one should cease driving the car for if these fragments go through the mesh of a gear set they can ruin the gears and increase the cost of the tranmission overhaul. Jim

Sorry to hear this, Your tranny is due for a total rebuild. Expect $1200 for the box, and then installation charge.

If a rebuild is due, he COULD do it himself...

By the way, Bill, welcome to the board!

As I have, I'm sure you'll find this place to be a wealth of information regarding your Porsche. Just come on in and strap yourself down, cuz it can come at you even faster than you ask for it!

Randy
