Sticky Throttle
My throttle has just started sticking - not drastically, just tending to hang onto the revs, and occasionally needing an extra prod when coming to a rest.
Can anyone guide me to the points that need a check and lubrication? Is there a particular place where the throttle tends to stick? Thanks.

That model uses a cable(?)
That would be the first thing to check and lube, besides having the pedal getting stuck in the carpet, or the return spring being weak. Unhook the cable at the throttle body to rule that out, and mark everything before removal. |

I just replaced an injector and after putting the intake manifolds back on. I noticed the same thing. If you push the linkeage from the engine bay, you will feel it hanging up under the drivers side intake manifold. I haven't fixed mine yet. Probably this weekend. Shouldn't be rough.

You pedal bushings are worn. I had the same issue last month.

The bellcrank on the side of the transmission will get dirty and stick. It will cause RPM hangups that are maddening. The bellcrank connects the horizontal piece of throttle linkage (forward of the transmission) to the piece that goes up to the throttle body.
Disconnect the two throttle linkages, remove the cotter pin, remove the bellcarnk, then remove the two plastic bushings from the bellcrank. Clean up everything and polish out the corrosion on the shaft on which the bellcrank turns. I put mine back together with Never Seize and never had another problem. |

If the throttle "un-sticks" when you depress the clutch pedal, Brian is wrong as this is indicative of binding in the pedal assembly.
If it doesn't he is correct. Then again, in an old car both are probaby the case.

If the bellcrank is binding, the throttle will not unstick if you depress the clutch.
If the bellcrank is sticking or the pedal assembly is sticking, only hooking your toe under the throttle pedal and pulling towards you will unstick the throttle. But, Victor is right -- both are probably worth looking into. |
