Door speaker options

I'm installing a new stereo in my 83 911, and getting rid of these ADS speakers (with tweeter).

What are my options for new speakers? I was told I have 5 1/4" slots and that i will need a new part fabricated to house the new speakers and to bolt onto the door.

$80 for both front from Tweeter.

what are my other options and what have others done?

thanks.

Are those ADS plates dead? If not, leave 'em in. They're good speakers.

2nd problem you have is the huge indentations you'll have in the door panel. You can remove the housing, and fit a 6.5" in there. MB Quart with a brand name amp would be my reccomendation.

no, they work fine. (they are model 300i)
i felt they were old and outdated, and since I'll be buying a new Nak. unit and amplifier, i may as well spend a couple more for good speakers. besides , one of the ads speakers i have now is missing the grill cover and i have no idea where to find that.

I was looking at boston acoustics (NX 57, 5 1/4") but at $150/pair, i'll have to think long and hard before spending the cash

6 1/2s will fit easily. You will get far better bass response from 6 1/2s. Also, you might want to check out the new Pioneer "oversize" 6 1/2s that are actually 6 3/4s. I have these in my doors and they fit just fine. They're high-quality 2-way speakers that are very strongly built and sound superb. With surprisingly strong bass accurate mid-range and highs. They are made out of stronger materials and have a much better crossover system than the average door speaker.

When it comes to speaker technology, most of the good speakers that have been made within the last couple of years are superior to almost any earlier speaker... including many of the high-end brands. The technology is constantly evolving... in particular the materials that the cones are now made of.

The 300 I's are great drivers, bummer about the grill. At the time they were produced they were considered among the best out there. These days things haven't changed much but if pieces are missing there's not much you can do.

You don't need to have adaptors made to fit the car. Source some 6.5" and it's a drop in fit once you remove the ADS drivers completely. Drop those 4 Phillips head screws just outside the speaker you removed and the housings should simply come off. a 6.5" will probably be needed to cover the holes left from mounting the plates anyhow.

I think that I have two of the ADS speakers in my basement. They are fried, but there should be at least one good grill. If you are interested, I'll look. I lucked out and found two replacements in very good shape.

YOu are going to have to listen to several of the better speakers to see which sound best. NO substitute (for listening).

There was a thread on high end speakers a week or 2 ago. JL's, Focals, and the ones above. I'm sure people can add 5 or 6 other brands.

I'll second what Randy said. Those a/d/s/ speakers are great. I wouldn't be in a hurry to get rid of them. I'd change everything else out first, THEN decide.

Well, there is the guy who has posted recently re improved cone materials. I would listen to new a/d/s speakers -- but try anything you think you want to buy vs. your present ones.

And, BTW, where is bell? Why hasn't he chimed in here? You might search on his name -- it's cheaper to research things on paper first....

I went for a pair of 6 1/2 Sony Xplods and they sound and look great! They look 10x better than my original speaker covers. I did do some custom fabricating to the door panel to get them to fit because the speaker cut out was for 5 1/4 speakers.
