Hmmmm. Possible job offer not far from Buttonwillow....
Most of the other Executives live around the Santa Margarita, San Luis Obispo area. I can't tell which towns/neighborhoods are good and bad. Anyone know? Anyone? Bueller? Bueller?

Don't worry too much about the Porsches getting stolen if that's your question. I have an '87 in the same driveway as my fiance's '99 Audi A4 station wagon. It's been stolen twice and they've never touched the Porsche...THEY CAN'T DRIVE STICK! Serious. Every shop around here tells me that kids just walk away from manual transmissions.

There really is not a bad neighborhood in San Luis Obispo. You may get the typical drunken valdalism around the University, so you may want to stay away from the Northwest corner of the city. SLO, as the locals call it, is a beautiful place to live. I lived there for a while, and I still have family in the area. Stay away from Santa Margarita/Paso Robles...way too hot in the summer and not as nice as SLO. You may also check out Morro Bay, Los Osos or Pismo Beach if you want to live right on the ocean.
Buttonwillow seems kinda far from SLO, it seems closer to Bakersfield and the valley. Edit: 94.2 miles from SLO to Buttonwillow

I lived in SLO as a student attending Cal Poly during the early '90's. I currently live three hours north, in the bay area. I enjoy visiting and would not at all mind living there if my job permitted it. If I were to move there I would focus on SLO, Morro Bay and Baywood Park.
While I consider the area safer than most, I should add that I did experience my only car theft there. I was renting a house on Johnson street, directly accross from French Hospital (for those who know SLO). I woke at 4AM to the sound of my very loud (5 speed) Datsun 240Z starting up. I ran outside and watched my car drive away. Luckily my car was recovered one week later. Only the CD changer was stolen from under the seat. That being said, I would not hesitate to move into the exact same area with my 911. Theft can happen anywhere. Only now I would add an engine kill switch so that my car could not be started easily. -Brad

My father has lived in that area for years, and I love visiting there. As the others mentioned, Los Osos/Baywood Park/Morro Bay are great residential areas. From what I've seen, anything close to the coast north of Santa Maria is decent.

some really fun roads past paso robles in the creston area to drive around on. my grandparents live up there and i love the area, i have to agree it does become a bit too hot during the summer in atascadero/templeton and paso robles.

Thanks. I'm trying to judge housing prices, etc and I need to know where the decent areas are to live...

I live in Morro Bay now and think this area is great!! (for now) It seems as though its quickly turning into Santa Barbara, as LA manages to spread its ugly wings north. Id say either Morro Bay, Cayucos, parts of SLO (NOT near cal poly), are very nice areas. If you need something more affordable and more spacious, like some property, id say Santa Margarita is better than Atascadero or Paso Robles. Do you plan on buying or renting? There are alot of places for rent right now because school is getting out, however they're not cheap. Avg. 3 bed 1 bath house in Morro Bay will rent for $1500 easy. As I said this is a very nice place and a recently exposed treasure, so Shhhh!! and tell everyone it sucks when you get here. Its so sad to see our overpopulated country destroy such peaceful places like this. Anyway, good luck and if you need any help from a fellow pelican please dont hesitate to ask.
O and if you dont mind me asking. What profession possibly brings you up this way?

I was a student in SLO from '85-90 (Cal Poly). Great town, in fact I stopped there for lunch just yesterday on the way down from San Jose. No bad neighborhoods, but you do have vandalism issues from the transient nature of the population (more than 50% of the population is students during the school year). I'd garage my Porsche there.
I like San Luis Obispo. Summer temps are in the 80's. Atascadero and Paso Robles are 20 degrees warmer in the summer. Morro Bay is 10 degrees cooler!

When I was stationed at Camp Pendleton ('82 - '91), my wife and I lived in Fallbrook and our friends lived near San Luis Obispo and spent alot of time there. Great place to live, but expensive (you already knew that) and traffic is bad, but traffic is getting bad "everywhere". Wonderful weather, great Mexican food and friendly people.

Actually, it's in the central valley, but where the company is, it's only supposed to be a 45 minute commute.

I looked it up yesterday, Buttonwillow is some 70 miles from SLO. I would really look at that commute. I believe you would be driving on a two lane road that can be quite dangerous.
