I have always wondered about this since I've never put the front tag on either of my 911's. I was never stopped, not even by the Highland Park PD which, as we have seen lately, is very focused on minor details.

In Hawaii, we're supposed to have our front plates on but

I do see anumber of vehicles out there without them. Cops seem to leave the specialty cars alone. Knock on wood.

In Colorado we are required to have the front plate. I just store my plate and bracket in the trunk. If ever stopped I'll just have to say "It Fell Off" and I was going to put it back on once I got home.

Bull****!!!

hello,

"Second, a front license plate restricts the performance of passenger vehicles. Modern cars are no longer being designed with front plates in mind. Installing the mounting brackets that are necessary to hold the plates interfere with the cars' aerodynamics, often get damaged during the car-washing process and also cause a devaluation of Collectors Edition or other such Limited Edition vehicles when required to drill or otherwise modify the front bumper"

Since in all of europe, front licence plates are compulsory, this whole paragraph is bull****!
in addition, when you look that over 50% of the cars sold in the US are SUV, I do not see how a licence plate will affect the car aerodynamism more than it already is!

I don't run one. I got a ticket for this in my Datsun once. I was pulled over for going 70 in a 55 zone, but the officer only wrote me up for the missing plate. Since no front plate is a non-moving violation, I was glad to get that ticket over a speeding ticket.

They're required in VA too, but lots of folks ignore it. I got nailed for it in the 993, but the cop had a hard on for me and had nothing else he could get me on.

Got a ticket in my Bimmer last fall. (pulled over for speeding in Houston, damn V1 wasn't hard wired yet and I had to charge my cell phone for a biz call, DOH!)

NONE of my cars have front plates. I would love to get this one off the books but having it there hasn't stopped me.

Don't know where mine is anymore, bad me got tagged for no inspection tickett/ out of date 9 months, live in an area where this incident will bring out the local SWAT , rolling along at 15/we pass each other/he whips around/full lights races after me/next thing 2 cruisers/gave them grief over this /why don't you tell me it's out of date when we see each other every morning at the coffee place, granted the one who did stop me was new / told his partners about it the next morning / and they laughed with me/ Plate has never been mentioned /we pass each other daily/ like some of us /some are good guy's / or ass++++/ they have a tough and often thankless job/ it's all about how the confrontation starts.
I just need to chill a bit, and promise to look for that plate officer.

I run one on my 911 but not on the Scirocco. I have custom plates on the 911, so I don't mind. I don't think it looks terrible, although I would much prefer to not have front plates at all.

What's the point of front plates, anyway? Seems like a silly requirement.

I agree I hate front plates. I keep mine in the car if I get stopped. The other problem here in CA is they can ticket you when your car is parked. They mail you the ticket. The Tuner crowd tells me if you leave the plate up on the dash when you park in the city they will let it slide.

my girlfriend got ticketed for this in l.a. the other day... she got pulled over solely for this violation. she brought her car in from pennsylvania, so it came with no front plate bracket. i had to go buy a bracket from the dealer, drill holes in the bumper, and rivet the bracket on. los angeles area cops have been cracking down on violators ever since the red light cameras were installed a few years ago.

Mine's registered in OK, no front plates. However, gate guards (army) constantly hold me up while they go check the rear plate. Local cops don't even look twice...go figure. There's a lot to be said for the OK regestration, especially when it comes to smog controls.

I have an idea that would be a good compromise.
Make license plates one big sticker. That way they would be cheaper to produce, to ship, store and be more aerodynamic.

In Massachusetts it is required but I leave mine off. Usually when I go in for an annual inspection sticker, they ask me to put it back on.

Seems as though the bigger issue in Tx these days is the license plate aftermarket 'surround' which can't obscure any of the "official lettering" like 'Texas' on the plate (which renders 99% of the license plate surrounds illegal). Anyone had any warnings from the constabulary? I've run my Porsches in Tx for 30yrs with no front plate. When I picked up the Boxster, the dealer gave me unofficial instructions for installing the plugs for the holes in the front bumper where the license should go. Apparently the license plate frames are 'backordered' from the factory.

I've NEVER had a front license plate on any of my Porsches (for over 10 years) or my Viper in Dallas, and I have never been given a ticket for this, even when being hassled for other violations, and being ticketed for an expired safety inspect.

I don't have a front plate... The chin spoiler has holes drilled in it but I don't have a bracket either. Got pulled over for it the other day, that and the inspection being 7 months overdue. Car failed inspection badly.
