Early 911 Selling Prices...

For all the hoopla about the early car prices rising, I keep seeing a ton of good-to-decent cars for sale. The concours cars will always get the most attention and the most comments, but these other cars must be selling.

Are they selling for around what the asking prices are, or are they fetching lower prices? Most people seem to base their valuations (if they aren't actively buying) on what they see as the asking price.

I want to know what these early cars are actually selling for. If you recently bought one, please let us know...

-Wayne

I bought a 1974 911S Targa (does that even qualify as an early 911? or does it have to be prior to 74?) for $5050, but it had 3 broken pistons which I fixed. All is well now.

It has 84k original miles, recent paint in the last 3-5 years, and has no rust. Interior is great except the dash.

Any ideas if this was a good price, or too high? Doesn't much matter now that I bought it....

Wayne,
My one and only 911 is a 72' T. It came running with a 2,2S engine that had lost compression on the 5th cylinder. Purchased in November 2002 for $5,500. I have $9,500 in it and it is far from excellent shape.

My thoughts, these 73' and earlier models are fully depreciated and are ripe for appreciating values.

I have it insured for $11,500 and I fully intend on increasing that in the future.

I know if I had an impact bumper car (74 on), a retro early style body would be on my list of to do's. Although that eventually would be worth less than the real thing.

I bought my 72s in December for $7000. It did not have the original engine but came with a real 73S motor. Car has webers but the original MFI came with the car. It also has the electromotive ignition. Also has the early sport seats.

I have spent another $5000 and about 100 hrs of my time.

I picked this 73 coupe up a few weeks ago. I really wasn't planning on buying it but the price was right. At least I hope so. I paid $4000. It needs seats and the paint could be better. There is a rust hole in the pan where it looks like it rusted from the air conditioner bracket. about 1" round. It runs like a top and the trans feels great.

You stole them both.

I think the prices of early 911s are tied to the price of houses. When this housing thing quits, maybe the cars will hold for a while. I doubt they will ever be worth less unless we get into a real, real bad economy.

The economy isn't that great in CA, but the cars are still selling and the houses are crazy.

Frankly, I think this BBS and the others that are popular has a lot to do with early car value. All the info and pics of RS clones, etc., has given the eraly 911 a boost in overall interest. Of course, there are many here like PWD72s that have had their cars all along. And then there's people that have gotten an early 911 fairly recently, like me.

I was actually looking for a mid year car because of the value and the fact that, for now, the '74-75 are smog exempt. I'm not the least bit sorry that I stumbled onto the early S. But, I wouldn't have paid the prices that they seem to go for these days.

Most of you know I paid $5000 for a big project. If it wasn't going to pan out, I was going to part it. It has the right stuff. That's not gonna happen now.

I don't know if i'll keep the coupe. It was definatly a spur of the moment type thing. The seller needed some cash and I had some.

The problem is I can only drive one at time and I like the top off.

6 months ago, my brother sold his 72T for his asking price of $7500 to the first person who looked at it, two hours after the ad came out. His phone rang off the hook for a week.

His car needed paint and body work, including some rust repair. It needed the interior completely redone and it needed the motor and trans completely rebuilt. The car was original, but poor condition. What does old Brucey say a poor condition 72T is worth?

My brother could have easily pulled $8-8.5k out of his car, judging by the interest.

As far as valuations on early cars, Bruce Anderson teaches one helluva engine rebuild class.

Okay, so in defense of Bruce, he doesn't seem too off here. I've always argued that he needed a fourth category (concours) to describe the "stratosphere cars." I know that I'm made fun of it, but I've seen early 911Ts at Pomona many, many, many times in the $3000-$4000 range, and 'S' cars in the $8-$10K range. Not concours, but good cars. Of course, that was a few years ago - Ebay's really killed off Pomona...

So it seems like the good condition cars (not concours or excellent) are indeed still selling for reasonable prices?

There was a local to me (Van Nuys) 70 S for sale about 7mo's ago that was listed on the PCA web site for 20,900. I was the first one to call and look at it.
It was a coupe with no sun roof in Conda green w/black int. And was 2.7 powered, ( Hauled Ass )
Had a drivers side only sport seat, new headliner, paint was very good.
It needed stuff though, The rear end was loud ( ring and pinion? ) needed tires and this and that.
Had a rust bubble under the paint high on one fender.
It looked good overall but was by no means a really clean example, just a nice driver.
Heck, It was Conda green originally and had been painted black once and white, I think the owner said. He had owned it around 10 years, But I think it might have always been in a state of work in progress.

Anyway, I made an offer of 20K w/ppi and the guy didn't want to take a deposit.
He called a few days later and said a guy in the East offered him 25K, So I said "I'd take it" and he did.

I'm glad I didn't get it now. I like galvanized flared fenders to much

I paid $5k for a '73T last May. The car needed a new front pan and had a rusted backseat. It was straight and had a nice engine with webers, a great shifting 915, and sport seats. It needed a ton of work to make it a really nice presentable car, but I still feel like I stole it based on some of the things I read about early car prices.

I paid a little over $7k for my '72T. I felt like I needed to go to church after I got this one. Its a nice car that came with no upgrades. Ive turned it into a project car but it didnt need much. I see people asking $10k-$12k for Ts in worse condition.

I think I got exceptional deals on both of my cars, but I looked for a long time to find them. Ive seen 5 or 6 cars in the last 2 weeks on the for sale forum here that I would have jumped at last year.

Whats up with the 87-89 G50 cars these days? A year ago I couldnt find a rough one for under $18k. There are two very worthy G50 cars on for sale right now that are below $18k.

FS: 1987 Porsche 911 Carrera Targa $17000
1987 911 Coupe for sale - San Francisco Bay Area

I almost fell out of my chair when I saw the '77 930 for $14k yesterday

First $14k takes her, '77 930:(

SCs also. Two nice looking ones for under $10k. Lelands heavily upgraded car is up for sale also for what seems like a steal.

I don't see how the prices in this thread (so far) confirm anything that BA lists????????

- The two 74's can be thrown out of the poll as they're not "early cars".

- Project911 - that car looks great! But at $11,500 that would be at the tiptop of BA's listings for a T. Maybe that fits BA's data, but would need to know more about the car.

- 72doug2,2s - a T bought for $5,500 and has $9,500 into and says it is still far from excellent condition.

- dmcummins - great looking car, but a T for $7000 plus another $5K and 100 hours (multiply by ??? $50-$75 per hour = $5000 more) to get it there. The coupe? That does look like a good deal and probably right in BA's ballpark.

- racea911 - sold a poor condition T for $7500. BA probably rates those at $3-4000.

svonkampen - $8000 for a 68L - that probably falls within BA's range as well.

So that's basically 2 data points so far that fall within BA's price ranges. As I've said before, I don't think BA's price data is off. It's the difference between what he considers poor/good/excellent condition and what I and many others consider poor/good/excellent condition.

I bought this '72 T a few months ago for $8900. It shows 79,000 on the odometer, and had a well documented engine rebuild 15,000 miles back. There is no rust (PO actually pulled up some carpeting to show repairs he had made; very straightforward, helpfull, and likable guy), but the paint is a little rough. It has been painted, just kind of a rough job with some dry spots and some orange peel. It has the 5-speed; original MFI (that was also rebuilt); 205/60 RZ15's on BBS wheels (wish it had original wheels, oh well). Interior is perfect except for two little tears in the headliner. The car runs like a champ and all in all I'm extremely happy with it. It is more or less a daily driver and I've rolled up just over 6,000 mile on it since I bought it. I feel like it was a fair deal for both of us and never did dicker on the price with the seller.
