Do any of you guys "Suggest" siping the tires? you know, cutting the horizontal groves in the tires. I had my off road tires on my jeep siped and they are quiter, grip better and help heat desipitation

For street use? Track use in the rain? Track use in the dry?
At least to me there seem to be too many variables to answer.

seems like a lot of work...how long does it take to do a tire? With the right tires you shouldn`t have to go to that length for grip...but why not.Let us know the details if you do it

Well I wont be doing it - There is a machine that does it for $10 per tire at Amrican Tire Co.

What is this, bizarre idea week? Before you run out and get your tires siped, shaved or heat cycled, at least know what the hell it does to your tires and car before you do it. Siping is for additional traction on primarily ice on road and rocks off road. Doing it to a high performance tire can give you the opposite effect not to mention a heat buildup!
Tire shaving and heat cycling is primarily for track use. Not all things good for the track are good for the street!

I would leave them alone, especially if they will ever be used on a track. Anything that changes the heat-generating characteristics, or potentially weakens the tire surface is risky. I've never heard of this being done for track use at all.
On the track you are going to be heating up the tires pretty significantly -- to the point where your tire pressures will spike by 8-10 pounds. if a tire comes apart, it could send your car end over end in a heartbeat.

Very few places have the ability and the equipment to shave tires. My tires seemed OK before I got on the track at Fontana. Anything over 80 and they began to shake. That track is really smooth and you can find out a lot of things about your car.
Anyway, Bigrubber, search 'shaving' here and read all what we've said over the months. Any reagular tire shop does not do a very good job of balancing and you will find this out the first time you go down the straights at WS. Yes, there is a back straight that wiggles a little but is faster than the front in many conditions. The problem with the balancing is the tires sold are seldom perfectly round. A tire 1/16th of an inch OOR exerts something like 500 pounds force at high speeds. It's a variable, so I'll leave it at that just as an example. So, you can't very well balance a tire on a computer at 65 mph that is going to get all contorted when you start to carry the mail. Don't worry about this and other matters. Go have fun and learn and when you get back tomorrw night, you will have a lot more things to think about and do besides trying to find dark tinted lenses. BTW, I can hook you up with Nate Jones in Signal Hill to shave your tires to round and balance them so you won't believe it's the same tire/wheel. I can draw a straight line on a piece of paper held agaist the steering wheel doing 100 in the Boxster if I can find a road smooth enough. Last edited by Zeke; 05-18-2004 at 03:42 PM.. |
