Dead battery - Alternator?

I went out last night to a restuarant in my 72T that I had just got running after putting in a new starter and battery. The 20 mile trip was uneventful until I got to the restuarant about dusk and the turn signals were not working and the headlights were extremely dim. The battery connections were OK and I did not notice any fuse problems. Needless to say, the car would not start after eating and we had to jump start it. During the jump start, the lights were strong and normal. After the cables were pulled the lights dimmed down again (extremely low). I made it down the road about a mile before it went DOA.

I got the car back by pulling another battery from a car at home and putting it in the 911.

Sooo...I am now at home thinking that what my next step should be. My thinkng is that I need an alternator. Is there anything else that I should be checking out?

At least check the charging voltage at idle...should be 13.8 to 14.7 or so. With the car off...a fuly charged battery should show 12.6 v. If you're showing 12-12.2..you're at half to 75% of full charge.

its most likely the alternator. check charging voltage like wil said and also do a voltage drop test of the groung connection to the battery by hooking one end of a voltameter up to the negitive terminal and the other up to the block or a good ground if you cant reach. make sure your on the terminal and not the clamp. the voltage should not read any more then 0.5v or 500mv , even if its 0.3v or over change the whole wire. some times wires get corroded inside and the will restrict voltage returning returning to the battery. you could also get voltage drop between battery and alternator supply wire by puting one end on + terminal and other on wire connection. only a severly damaged wire would give you such problems but this is a good thing to check and fix if your having charging problems
good luck with this

Your new battery could be defective; hopefully it hasn't killed your alternater.

Thanks everyone for your replies. I am going to test the battery this afternoon, will check the charging voltage and do a voltage drop test.
This forum is really a great service thanks to people like you.

Keep in mind that you can only get an accurate charging voltage test with a fully charged battery.
