Help! Power Bleeder Blowout - what happened!

I was using my new power bleeder for the first time. I had rebuilt the calipers and was going to flush and bleed the system with new Blue stuff. Followed all the instructions. Hooked it up, pumped it up to about 12psi. Start to walk to the right rear tire to start the bleeding process. I hear liquid. I look under the car and see a large puddle and its getting larger. I released the pressure on the power bleeder but not before 2/3 of the quart dumps on the carport. There is a small pool of fluid under the brake power booster, and a little under the battery. Most of the stuff on the ground came out of a plugged hole in the frame. See picture. Doesn't look like there is anything inside the car.

This is not the kind of stuff that is supposed to happen 3 weeks before my first DE.

Any ideas on what happened? What broke? What needs to be fixed!

Thanks
Andrew

Same thing happened to me last night. I have yet to do anything right on this car the first time Ive tried.

There is a overrun hose that goes from the top of the master cylinder reservoir to a small tank right above that in the front pan. By the time I had the rear passenger side caliper done I had pumped at least a liter of brake fluid through that hose and into the front pan of my car. I was so pissed I wiped it up an quit for the night. I'll try again today.

If all else fails read AND FOLLOW the instructions on the power bleeder. On the system with the vacuum booster there is a chance one of the hoses/gromments between the reservoir and the MC is leaking due to a combination of age and excessive bleeding pressure. There is really no reason to exceed 10 to 15 psi. Jim

You may also want to put a hose clamp on the overflo tube, I found that when I clamped it off I had leakage at the connection of the hose to the fluid reservoir, a 30 cent clamp took care of the issue.

It was the overflow tube. That's where it vents to.

Brake fluid makes a mightly fine paint remover. I hope you rinsed it off.

I did the same thing - you are not alone.

P.S. - I just got some new PBR "Ultimate" brake pads for DE use. We'll see how they do.

I screwed the bleeder cap to the resevior too tight and the same thing happens. Fluid runs out on the floor. Makes a nice mess

I don't know yet. I put in OEM pads for the street. I will change pads for the DE. I am open to any suggestions from folks out there on what they use for the track. Otherwise, I'll take what the good folks at Performance Imports suggest when I have them do my tech inspection.

Andrew

Andrew,

I've read recommendations not to exceed 10psi (particularly on older cars) because the rubber hoses from this side of the master cylinder are not designed to be pressurized. I typically do mine at about 7-8 psi.

By the way, the underside of your car looks very clean, nice.

Regards,
Andrew.
