![]() ![]() Yup, that is a 917 buried in the second row of that field of open topped sportscars as they roll off for their start. And no -- it's not the start of some vintage event -- this was a contemporary event during the time when 917's were "State of the art" Does anyone care to venture a guess on the Who/What/Where and When story behind this picture? Here's a clearer view of the 917 from that event: ![]() Bonus points if you can name some of the other drivers, cars and such details of the event. ![]()

Just a guess, Watkins Glen 1969 Can Am race before the pits were moved back around the corner and up the hill? The day after the 6 hr. race?

Nope -- the track is way too wide. I suspect that this will even stump the "ringers" like Cegerer. Jim Garfield and tchanson.
So it's open to everyone!

Right. Wide. Sebring? No, that's too easy. You just said it would be a tough one. Think obscure.

Or is it Fuji International, Japan. Probable Rico Steinmann and Jo Siffert. 1969? This is a tough one.

Definitely Japan. Group 7 race. 1969 version of 917, but maybe the race was 1970. Off to the references ......

Most definitely Japan....Fuji Intl 1969 or 70...Group 7 race that allows Group 5 and 6 endurance racers. Forgot the 917...maybe David Pipers car if it wasn't Sifferts..
---Wil PS- big bore cars were Japanese Group 7 (Can-Am type) Datsuns and Toyotas. Last edited by Wil Ferch; 05-24-2004 at 06:19 PM.. |

Big Bore local cars were Japanese 6 liter Datsuns (Nissans) and Toyotas....I think the Toyota was a 6L v-12, if I recall correctly...

I think the Toyota 7 was a 5.0L V8 in 1969. The Nissan R381 had a 6.0L, not sure how many cylinders. This was Japan's version of the CanAm. The 917 was trounced - 4 laps down. It was David Piper's car with Siffert sharing the driving duties.
