Porsche Crest 911RS - what's a good donor?

Hey everyone,

Thinking about my winter project already.

What's an ideal donor "tub" for a project. Not sure if I will go the RS route, track car,...

For example is a 912 a good donor tub? The plan is for this to be a ground up type of project.

Sorry about the few details...just might want to take advantage of couple of deals out there on engineless, limited body or rust damage, rolling chassis.

Thanks in advance for your suggestions...

Thanks

Andy

The topic heading probably isn't the best....just looking for a good donor rooling chassis...want one that will be the most flexible from a project perspective....

Thanks

Andy

I like the idea of starting with a 77 or later because of the less rust issues. I think starting with an SC with that 3.0 is even better. When you get the weight down - really fast. There are some issues with converting to a long hood (brackets and stuff) but if you are willing to do a project of this magnitude at home you shoudl be all right.
Also more options for brakes and suspension (boge or bilstein struts and 3.5 bolt spacing for the calipers).

Next up I guess is a 72 because of the cool oil fill location.

My favorite would be a 964 beacause of the monster 3.6 in the back.

Have fun!

I'd say the SC b/c of brakes, susp., non-rust issues, etc.

Hello Andy,
a 1969 to 73 will be more economic: long hood and ...but a SC without rust will be nice too, the problem is to find it here...
where are you located in canada ?
i saw here in Quebec a project for sale maybe insteresting for you !

I'd eliminate '72...if you are thinking accurate clone. The RS was a'73, remember? Therefore, any year '69-'73 would work...except '72 with the external door for the oil tank. On the other hand...if you're building the hotrod 911 YOu want? It's your thing...

Anything in good condition would be acceptable. Look for someone elses project and you'll save yourself a ton of time and money.

I opted for an 82 SC. Lucked out and found a sunroof-less coupe here an the board. Considering the rust issues I think an SC is the best bet. If your funds are unlimited then the 964 is the way to go. There is an article on a real RS VS a 964 RS back date. There were some issues back dating the 964 regarding bumper stuff that won't be an issue with an SC. The 964 is heavier as well. It was one of the things mentioned in the article. Basically, the impression was the 964 clone was a serious torque best, but didn't have the "feel" of the real RS...

A pic of my start point...
