Intermittent High Beam Solution Help
Sorry for the long title -- I'm trying to fix the intermittent high beam flash (when the turn signal falls back into place after a turn, or even over a bump, the high beams go on). I removed my wheel per this thread: Liitle help wheel thread
Now I'm faced with the turn signal/Low/High beam stalk and switch. This thread (High Beam Fix Thread) talks about the three copper strips, and I have cleaned them. My question is about the strips themselves. I'm pretty sure that the strip closest to the driver (or on the right viewed from the side) is the high beam strip, and is the one that should be bent back to provide some room. I want to confirm that that is indeed the correct strip, and if you have any advice on distance (one mm?) I wouldn't mind either. Thanks again. With the board's help, this is proving pretty simple, and I'd encourage people to do the fix themselves, and put the $120 a new stalk costs toward beer. Jared

I never had much luck cleaning/bending the contacts - the problem always came back after a few weeks. I ended up shelling out the $100 for a switch.
It's also a good idea to run a relay kit for these lights, especially if you use the highbeams a lot. It might just cut down on switch wear, too. Search under "sucro relay" for a plug-and-play kit.

I have had good luck cleaning/adjusting the contacts. The forward contact is for the high beam flash. The rearward one is for the high beam ON.
Pull the contacts apart and operate the lever. If they make contact before the "stops" take over you are all set. make sure to clean both sets of contacts.

I bent mine because it got where the highbeams were bouncing on all of the time. Looking at mine it was pretty obvious. Both of the outside strips are for the highbeams, but one is for the momentary on flash mode, and one is for turning them on. On mine the middle contact was practically touching one of the two outside contacts. That was the one that needed to be bent, but to tell you the truth you could bend them both. They don't need to be bent much, just 1/32" gap between the contacts is more than enough, maybe even 1/64".

the thick steel strip is bent ever so slightly toward the brass ones, generally you don't bend the brass ones. support the pivot end of the thick strip as you bend a slight curve into it.

I'll try to figure out the curvature into the steel strip. The point is, I guess to get distance between all three? I assumed the furthest forward was the low beam contact (in hindsight I guess it goes on automatically with the knob).
So the end goal is distance between all three strips, either through a curvature of the steel one or by bending the brass strips slightly? Thanks.

The sucro relay is a good idea but a complete aftermarket redesign of that stupid/primitive switch assembly is in order.

I bent mine quite a few months ago and bought a new replacement. It's still sitting on the shelf. Problem never came back, lucky I quess.
