Replace Exhaust Studs??
With the help of this board my heat exchanger removal went without a problem!! I soaked them with PB B'laster once a day for a week. Used a T-handle 8mm hex key on the barrell nuts and they came right off. I used the famous "dremel your nuts off" method on the nuts and it worked prefectly.
My question is: are you supposed to replace the studs at this point? If so, what is the recommeded replacement? Thanks again for all the help!!!

I just did this for two reasons; change to shorter studs so I could use the barrel nuts with my thin-flange SSI's, and to replace the original studs since they were 24 years old. I used heat and PB Blaster, as well as an Assenmacher 8mm stud removal socket. 11 studs came out easily, I broke one off level with the case and had to drill it out. It's basically a crapshoot, but now I know I have 12 new studs with plenty of anti-seize on them. If your car has been in AZ most of its life, you probably do not have much corrosion. As far as replacements, a lot of folks seem to be going with stainless steel, I went with OEM...should be good for another 24 years

Hey Brad<
Thanks for the response! Well, the car has not been in AZ it's whole life. Some in NY and some in Florida. What is a "Assenmacher 8mm stud removal socket"? Where do I get one? I'm still questioning if I'm suppose to replace the studs??? Anyone know?

I'd say if they stay in and look all right, leave em alone. Why go looking for trouble?

LEAVE'EM ALONE! If they are not broken or have terminally damaged threads, DON'T try to remove them. Unless you have a leprechaun in both pockets and a bushell basket full of four leaf clovers, they will break when you try to remove them. I would simply chase the threads with an 8mm die and put everything back together using the new copper hex nuts on the outside studs and plenty of anti-sieze on the barrell nut studs.

I have very little experience to back this up but, don't remove them. if one would break I would not want to be the one who is gonna hand drill out that flush broken stud...
