oil cooler
What would a BRASS tube oil cooler w/mounts for the rt front wheelwell cost? Can you recommend a source? I did a search for "brass tube oil cooler" and came up with zilch. Thanks. I hope PP doesn't carry it otherwise I'd be really embarrassed asking such a dumba$$ question.

Chris,
In case you did not see my post in the "Pelicans @ parts haven" thread (should have been spelled "Heaven") pelicans @ parts haven Here is the one I picked up Sunday for $180. I ran it back to my car before saw you. ![]() $200 to $300 is more the norm. I am in contact with a guy who will sell one for $300 if you are interested. -Brad

Hey Brad,
Yeah, I saw your post and that's what inspired me to open this thread. So your contact makes them or does he just have one left for sale? Have you been able to install yours yet? Let me know if you need a hand, I'm free on Saturday afternoon or Sunday. |

I read this thread: Front Oil Scoop Cooler Which led me to this WTB add. WTB Brass Oil Cooler I contacted both sellers. One could not decide if he wanted to sell. The other seller got back to me last week. He wants $300. I believe the brass cooler was only offered in the US in '84 so they are a bit rare. Many people like the brass cooler. A cut-n-paste from one of Wayne's posts: In order of performance (lowest to highest) - No Cooler - Trombone Cooler - 1984 Carrera Cooler w/o fan - Brass Tube Cooler - Late Carrera Cooler with fan I might take you up on the offer of help but I am not sure when I will be able to install the cooler. Based on my progress with my suspension upgrade project yesterday, it might be a few weeks. I think I'll stop and buy a sledge hammer on the way home from work tonight. -Brad

I believe my '85 had a radiator type cooler (it's been a while) in the front fender well w/o fan.

Let me know what you'll need a sledgehammer for because I'm doing the suspension thing soon with shocks, tbars and tie rods.

Hey those are some of my old threads
![]() I have since installed my brass cooler and I must say it has made a very nice difference. For the $300 I spent (including fittings/fab/install) I would say it is very well worth it. Cheers to low oil temps!

So you are going to upgrade your suspension? This is a change from yesterday. Does your wife know about this? If so, I guess you really do wear the pants. Did you buy the turbo-tie rods at Parts Heaven for the sale price of $90. If so, are they the good german ones that Pelican sells? Do a search. There was a recent thread about some poor aftermarket tie-rod kits on the market. The suspension is the only place on the 911 that it is socially acceptable to wail on with a sledge hammer. There are two pins on the bottom of each front strut, behind the rotor, that need to be driven out. The top one is a rolled spring that holds the strut insert in place. The bottom one is a tapered, threaded pin holds the ball joint to the strut. The two top ones I managed to drive out. The first bottom I had to drill out. If I had had a heavier hammer I might have been able to drive it out. My week claw hammer was not up to the task. One recommendation: use a real punch to drive out the pins. I tried a screwdriver first and made no progress. Once I tried a punch, the upper pins were shortly removed. I am going to buy a sledge hammer to remove the last of the four pins. I dulled three cobalt-steel drill bits removing the third pin last night. Oh yeah, think about changing the ball joints while you are in there if you have not already. It's all described in the 101 projects book. Also read this thread before starting: Is replacing ball joints and tie rods a PITA? . I have the castle nut socket if and when you need it. Don't pay $40 for it. -Brad

you two crack me up. i added a few more tools to my arsenal. i have the sledge in small and large. i have yet to touch the car with either. but the thought occasionally creeps into my head. but more importantly, i got the tool to pop the ends of the tie rods, and the tie rod wrench is currently in a state of become "not permanently borrowed". you are welcome to them if needed. i can also help.
chris, happy, so happy you took your car off the market. you dont want a sterile miata anyways. those things are just clones of each other. let me know if you need my help, either of you. my girlfriend could use the quiet time. oh, i was considering one of the oil coolers that chuck is selling. i am trying to figure out the fan portion of the equation. altho my fan on my 75, never turned on. not hot enough.

clean the garage, and we can "parallel" park it onto the side without the garage door. lets get busy! lets do the clutch cable, pedal cluster and tie rods at the same session. that way we can jack the car up, just once. once done, i dont think you will want to even think about another car. although i did meet another longtime friend with a 300 hp, suspensioned up RX7. that thing was wild looking. i declined a ride. he wants to join us for the next mines road run. great another mazda.
