AB 2683? the effing bill!

i have been thinking about this one alot. as some know, i am almost the proud owner of an 81SC. this bill can haunt me. i can promise that i will write my senator religiously, and hopefully this bill dies a quiet death. but if it passes, how realistic is it for a 20 something year old car to keep passing emissions? should i bail on the newer car? i guess it isnt too late. what are all you other SC owners going to do? i was amazed, the seller, my friend had to take the car to a "smog only"station. will these cars need to go to a smog station forever? this bill sucks!

mine was so low on emissions the tech could not believe it at my last smog check. a well tunned 3.0l motor will only need to pass production era requirments (currenlyy anyway). when you buy it it will be the current owners resonsibility to get it smogged. if it dont pass then you walk away.

the 81 does have the oxy sensor, so there is no smog pump. a new oxy sensor is about 20 times cheaper than a new smog pump.

as i understand it. the new smog testing involves alot more than just what is coming out of the exhaust. the early 80's cars are being sent to smog only stations, where they really scrutinize the cars from all aspects. this well be hell.

The engines are not being subjected to higher restrictions than they were when the car was new. In general, the smog limits are very reasonable, and only poorly maintained, worn out engines that have broken emissions components on them fail.

As a result, most people who complain that their car can't pass smog, aren't willing to put in the money to maintain them or fix them when something breaks. A well-maintained 911 with a working emissions system should be able to repeatedly pass the smog test time and time again.

My problem with the emissions laws are that they require all the orginal emissions equipment to be present. I'd really like to install tbitz's injection, but that wouldn't be legal. If the laws were strictly a performance standard then there would be things like aftermarket catalysts available and performance headers to fit.

Yes, I suppose that's a good argument. The trouble is that the sniffer tests only measure two pollutants out of hundreds that the original cars are meant to restrict. When the car is tested by the EPA (or whomever does the testing), they test for a whole bunch of stuff that's not tested at the smog station. Replacing aftermarket equipment onto the car means that the equipment hasn't been tested to the EPA's (I think it's the EPA, maybe not) standards.

There are ways to get aftermarket components CARB certified (like the supercharger I'm putting on my 318is), but it is a long-drawn out process and most aftermarket companies don't really want to go through it...

I agree with Banjomike, If it was based upon meeting pollutant standards, that would be fine as many aftermarket upgrades will actually outperform stock pieces, but because it's not stock, they fail the visual inspection. If this were about pollution and not money and the gov't really cared about diminishing pollutant counts, they'd realize that in a quest for performance and meeting standards, BOTH the performance junkies as well as the Green folks could be satisfied!!!

Like Wayne said, a well maintained SC should pass emissions no problem. The problem is that it limits the performance upgrades you can make, and honestly who wants to leave their cars stock?! Not me for one, thats why I drive an Emissions exempt 1972 911!!! 3.6 without any emissions crap or catalytic converters to rob my engine of my horsies.

thanks guys, so if this bill passes, my SSI's dreams evaporate. (unless someone invents a quick release system!)

Shoulda kept the '75. Isn't that now exempt? You can remove your thermal reactors and install your SSIs. Of course, there will always be a situation requiring the presence of the original equipment. That's what's nice about the early 911s. There ain't no smog equipment save for a little gas vapor recirculation and oil tank vapors being eaten by the induction.
